Syrian Men*

Ain’t no women allowed to celebrate in those streets

mortalglowworm@reddthat.com on 29 Sep 2024 05:01 next collapse

I am not sure if this is an orientalist/racist comment (no women in streets because it is the Middle East/they are Arabs) or a super based one (it is the stronghold of the more religious/jihadist groups).

eatthecake@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2024 11:39 next collapse

TIL talking about women’s rights is racist.

paddirn@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2024 12:01 next collapse

I consider myself liberal, but online liberals love to jump to conclusions to find fault and assume the worst in other people’s comments, then accuse them of being one thing or another. It’s like a reflex, it just happens uncontrollably.

“Oh, you like Downton Abby? Obviously you’re down with British colonialism and the oppression of third world countries.” Or “You liked Alien Romulus? Is that because you enjoy nonconsensual penetration and forced pregnancies?” Or whatever the hell the topic at hand is.

It’s like a game of virtue-signaling one-upmanship to show, “Look how much better I am than you. I care about this thing you hadn’t ever considered before.”

You liked Alien Romulus? Is that because you enjoy nonconsensual penetration and forced pregnancies?

Yes, this sounds like a real thing that people totally say. Because there’s so much alienophobia and an ongoing genocide against aliens. I’m sorry you’re suffering so badly from this legitimate problem. You are the real victim. smh.

Where’s the talk about women’s rights? I don’t see it here.

angrystego@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2024 15:15 collapse

There’s not a single woman if you take a look at the video and the photos in the article. The comment is based.

technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 29 Sep 2024 15:47 collapse

The question isn’t whether there’s women. It’s why there’s no women. The wrong answer is some kind of racist islamophobia. The right answer is recognizing that islamofascism and ziofascism are close allies with virtually the same goals.

Here’s a search of (non-fascist) celebrations in syria. Plenty of women.

angrystego@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2024 16:54 collapse

That’s a good approach. I tried to search for celebrations in 2024 to make it recent, because those things can change, but I didn’t get enough relevant pictures to decide (most celebrations with obvious women were indoors). There would surely be other ways to find out what is the current women rghts situation in Syria (and it could also differ regionally, I expect). I won’t be able to go down that rabbit hole today, though. If you happen to have more information, be sure to share, I’m genuinely interested.

what ?? syria is secular

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 29 Sep 2024 07:55 collapse

Honestly, if anyone has the right to schadenfreude Hezbollah it's Syrians. They're doing good work in Palestine but holy fuck did they have to support the Syrian government out of all people?

technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 29 Sep 2024 15:40 collapse

When the alternative is ISIS, the syrian state starts looking not so bad.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 29 Sep 2024 17:06 next collapse

I mean there are other groups in Syria so it's not like there was a lack of options. The option makes sense in terms of pure geopolitics because of the relationship between Iran, Syria and Russia, but that doesn't mean shit to the Syrians who suffered and continue to under Bashar.

Billy@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 29 Sep 2024 17:13 collapse

The alternative is the libertarian socialist AANES (Rojava).

alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml on 30 Sep 2024 22:01 collapse

Last I knew, Rojava was working the the Syrian government. They’re quite aware that if they had their own state, Turkey would invade and genocide them. Not that Turkey hasn’t been bombing them in Syrian territory anyway.
