Iran protest death toll could top 30,000: local officials (time.com)

As many as 30,000 people could have been killed in the streets of Iran on Jan. 8 and 9 alone, two senior officials of the country’s Ministry of Health told TIME—indicating a dramatic surge in the death toll.

So many people were slaughtered by Iranian security services on that Thursday and Friday, it overwhelmed the state’s capacity to dispose of the dead. Stocks of body bags were exhausted, the officials said, and eighteen-wheel semi-trailers replaced ambulances.

The government’s internal count of the dead, not previously revealed, far surpasses the toll of 3,117 announced on Jan. 21 by regime hardliners who report directly to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. (Ministries report to the elected President.) The 30,000 figure is also far beyond tallies being compiled by activists methodically assigning names to the dead. As of Saturday, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said it had confirmed 5,459 deaths and is investigating 17,031 more.

If it weren't for the CIA, there wouldn't be a theocracy and sanctions wouldn't be strangling the workers. But tell me again how democratic the USA and Israel are.

If this was reddit they would get your account violated by reporting you to reddit a thousand times on different posts until one stuck. Or just sending your name to be violated for other reasons.

This is blatant in our faces manipulation for more war with iran so israel can keep the forever war going and not have elections or have the leadership have to admit they made a mistake or as the case may be for them to definitively blame everyone else for it.

Idk why they would allow the failure to stay in to address the fallout from the failure though, that must be from the stacking of their government for 20 years with their appointees and their concentration of and deals with media.

More than that, they probably consider the attack the best thing that happened to them, gave them an excuse to do the things they’ve long wanted in an environment where the mask is off, and the rot in western institutions is so thorough, nothing is too much for the west, not wars against 4 countries under false pretense and an ongoing ghetto reprisal for 2 years targeting civilians and a ragtag militia with small arms fighting the most advanced army in the world.

The democrats didn’t even try to hide it either, past presidents put the breaks on Israel, no more.

“The workers” have absolutely no avenue for change with the CIA and Mossad constantly looking for an opening to balkanize Iran. Not through reform, not through revolution.

As bad as the Islamic Republic is, it is not comparable to what happened in Iraq and Syra after those states failed. Millions of people died, many more were displaced. And for what? Hardly for worker’s rights.

Don’t leftwash imperialism. You want to show solidarity with the Iranian people, then let them fucking cook instead of making excuses for coup attempts and terrorism.

Man, Israel couldn’t even achieve these numbers with tanks, air planes, and the full force of their military in Gaza, and they were bombing fucking tent cities! 15000 dead per day my ass. Whoever believes this shit is a rube

mirshafie@europe.pub on 26 Jan 08:52 collapse

I’ve got to say these numbers do seem pretty unbelievable. It’s at least 10x the number of casualties compared to previous protests, in a much shorter span of time.

Of course it’s difficult to assess the damage when communications are so sparse, but at least so for my family in Tehran and elsewhere have not indicated in any way that mass shootings were taking place. 15k dead would imply extensive use of live ammo. This would have been heard.

That being said, my guess is that this crackdown was indeed more violent than it has been on previous occasions, simply because the US was lined up to bomb if it had looked like the government was losing control. So they had really strong incentives to repress extraordinarily hard. 15k is still a very tall order.

3abas@lemmy.world on 27 Jan 09:19 collapse

Israel used over 6 nuclear bombs worth of explosives directly targeting the most densely packed concentration camp after destroying escape routes, and they couldn’t get those numbers… Tall order is right.

mirshafie@europe.pub on 27 Jan 16:55 collapse

At some point, the bones under the rubble in Gaza will be recovered. I wouldn’t be surprised if we then discover that the 60k figure is multiplied by a bit.

hector@lemmy.today on 25 Jan 16:49 next collapse

That is 3x the high end of the estimates even in the NYTimes which is Israel’s fairy godmother and bitch and as such pumping their bullshit, which includes inflaming protests and inflating numbers like this.

Whomever wrote this article is a tool. Working to build up more cause for war, and playing the left into supporting it under the auspices of throwing off a regime, when they are in the middle of a war with Israel and the US that they are powerless to hit back effectively in. They are still in rally around the flag, you dumbshits think a protest is going to overthrow them now?

The ones playing you know better, they know they will get protesters killed right now, to justify bombing them again, killing leadership, the aftermath of which would give them neverending manufacturies for more strikes given their dishonesty and media’s craven acquiescance.

perestroika@slrpnk.net on 26 Jan 02:39 next collapse

I remind of a news article back then, telling of an eye doctor in one hospital counting 400 gunshot eye injuries.

Back when it was happening, I extrapolated that to 2000 gunshot eye injuries per city, and wondered how many cities to multiply the result by. In the end, I gave up with logic and guessed 36 000 gunshot eye injuries per Iran. And that’s strictly only gunshot eye injuries. Not neck, chest, stomach, arm or leg injuries.

In situations were the flow of information is impaired - like by an internet blackout, which is still in force - information about the scale of events trickles out.

I remind of the earthquake in Turkey a few years ago. At first, 50 dead were reported. As hours and days passed, communications were restored and victims counted, it became… over 50 000.

en.wikipedia.org/…/2023_Turkey–Syria_earthquakes

This is how infromation arrives.

As for the rest of your post - it is not for me, so I won’t adress it.

The Iranian government is a repressive band of authoritarians, and to claim so isn’t American propaganda or inflated bullshit. Iranians have repeatedly stood up against them because they’re being oppressed as they had been under the shah. Now, the exact number is infinitely hard to pinpoint because of limited information trickling out of the country like @perestroika@slrpnk.net said, but that’s a separate issue. The Iranian authorities themselves admit to a few thousand, and it’s not far-fetched that they underestimate the number.

hector@lemmy.today on 26 Jan 14:04 collapse

Your numbers suggest inflated bullshit. More than suggest, what did you say, you assumed tens of thousands of eye injuries based on an account of hundreds in one place. In a country in effect still at war with Israel and the US.

Iran is a brutal theocracy that uses rape and murder as state policy to terrorize their citizens.

The government was shooting protesters in the eyes to mutilate them for life, for the “crime” of protesting.

They cut the internet so they could do it in the dark.

A journalist reporting on how many humans the Iranian government murdered isn’t being “a tool”.

And here you are wholeheartedly shilling for murder and tyranny.

hector@lemmy.today on 27 Jan 08:52 collapse

Inflating casualties to justify war is very toolish. You speak of government oppression as if this was in a vacume, and not during a one sided war israel has waged against them with impunity.

Those figures inflated by israel of all people. But you what, celebrate civil wars our government starts for them and causes because their governments are bad, nevermind yours is worse in causing these problems, and also in attacking them cause more brutal oppression.

The only thing Israel’s tools are accomplishing is getting protesters associated with the enemy in war, to sacrifice to kill more Iranians in more war.

Have you tried looking past your hand?

Are you unaware that Israel and the US MSM are running a huge progranda campaign to manufacture consent for attacking Iran?

Are you unaware that Israel is in a state of “maximum alert” for potential retaliation or even preemptive attacks from Iran?

Are you unaware that Israel’s government both pressuring Trump to attack Iran and is worried Trump wants an easy Venezuela style “regime change” and what it means if the US gives up and Trump calls Iranians brave like he did with the Houthis after they didn’t buckle to US show of force?

Are you unaware that Israel is incompetently lying about Iran killing Jews? www.instagram.com/reel/DUAUHXgCF1S/
