Trump waives tariffs on Mexico, not Canada, for 1 month on most products (globalnews.ca)

U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday he will temporarily waive tariffs on products from Mexico that fall under the North American free trade agreement, two days after launching a continental trade war.

The announcement did not mention Canada, which is also facing sweeping tariffs on all goods entering the U.S., despite Trump’s commerce secretary saying earlier that both countries would “likely” see a reprieve. It came shortly after Trump levelled new attacks against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following a heated exchange Wednesday.

“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social following a scheduled call between the two leaders.

Until next month right?

the damage is done, canada will be looking for other sources of similar products like the EU, or Nz, australia, or even asia.

Um, not sure they were going to pay anything anyway…

I know this is just bullshit his supporters will believe, but I’m starting to wonder if he’s actually in on the con, or just a demented old man being manipulated.

It also occurred to me when he called Ukraine peace talks “doing business”.

Indeed, that's not how tariffs work. smh.

breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca on 06 Mar 2025 18:23 next collapse

The auto industry already had a 30-day exemption from tariffs.

Thank you for letting me know to look into that. My head is spinning so much with everything going on that I didn’t know about or even consider such a thing.

idk, Trump doesn’t seem to give two shits about TSLA. The whole presidency doesn’t seem to have been a great deal for Musk at all (assuming he’s not eating out of the treasury or something). xAI doesn’t get AI endorsement and oil industry takes priority over Tesla at every turn.

DaddleDew@lemmy.world on 06 Mar 2025 20:48 next collapse

The tariffs purpose is to damage Canada’s economy in a severely misguided and ignorant plan to annex it.

He saw how the lagging economy ruined Trudeau’s approval ratings and thinks that damaging the economy more will somehow magically make Canadians want to join the US.

Zaktor@sopuli.xyz on 06 Mar 2025 20:53 collapse

As a single state no less.

pezhore@infosec.pub on 06 Mar 2025 23:25 collapse

Every part of the whole “51st state” plan is insane, but to admit Canada as one single unit is absolutely fucking bonkers. It’s literally bigger in square miles/km than the United States. It would need to be at a minimum 10 states (one per province) but would probably benefit conservatives if they split up some of the more conservative provinces into more states.
