Russians ‘burning faces’ of dead North Koreans to keep them secret: Zelenskyy (www.rfa.org)

Summary

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims Russian forces are burning the faces of dead North Korean soldiers to hide their involvement in Ukraine.

He says North Koreans are now being deployed in significant numbers, particularly in Russia’s Kursk region, where 200 have reportedly been killed or wounded.

The U.S. confirmed indications of North Korean casualties, while South Korea imposed sanctions on officials and entities involved in North Korea-Russia military cooperation.

… Are you saying there aren’t any north Koreans involved in the war?

Because at this point that is akin to denying the sun is warm.

EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml on 18 Dec 04:39 next collapse

That you’re trying to claim that I’ve said things that I did not. I’m saying that radio free Asia is CIA propaganda that puts a western slant on their propaganda.

GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip on 18 Dec 05:33 collapse

Mentioning that in this context does give the distinct impression you want to cast doubt on the fact that NK conscripts are being employed by russia though. Why else would you mention that here?

rzadkie@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 20:31 collapse

Does it? I think this person suggests that this media outlet is making shit up. As to why mention it - because making them cartoonishly evil diminishes the weight of what they’ve really done - among other things.

RightEdofer@lemmy.ca on 18 Dec 21:16 collapse

The article literally just quotes a few leaders like the hundreds of other articles on this topic. The fact none of you even read it and can’t seem to do anything but attack the source doesn’t exactly suggest good faith. I suppose every comment not talking about the burning faces is a distraction.

rzadkie@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 22:12 collapse

Quotes their comments on the presence of nk troops, not on the implied systematic face burning. And then they admit they cannot verify the video. It’s the fucking buryats all over again

Lemmy.world ironically talking about echo chambers?

Maalus@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 23:56 collapse

They are talking about .ml unironically, outright saying the truth - that .ml is a pure tankie propaganda instance and 99% of the time someone from there comes out to spout unsupported claims, get into a “PROVE MY EXTRAODINARY CLAIMS AREN’T TRUE” argument, loses it immediately and still tries to excuse a murderous regime literally melting the faces of their soldiers so they couldn’t be recognized by anyone.

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 14:05 collapse

And yet it could still be true information that you’re disagreeing with simply because the source is propaganda. You do understand that propaganda and falsehoods are not the same thing, yes?

EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml on 18 Dec 14:53 collapse

The BBC article doesn’t make the false claim of Russia burning off their faces to keep it a secret.

Point where it says Russia is burning off their faces to keep it a secret

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 14:53 collapse

Seriously?

On Monday, President Zelensky posted drone footage on Telegram that showed a number of men taking cover behind trees, saying they were North Korean troops who had just taken part in an assault on a Ukrainian position.

He also posted footage which he said showed Russian troops trying to conceal the presence of North Koreans on the battlefield by using a campfire to burn the faces of those who had been killed.

All you had to do was read the article and you didn’t bother because you’re too convinced you’re right and all of these sources are lying.

It’s not even a very long article.

archomrade@midwest.social on 18 Dec 15:26 collapse

I don’t even have a horse in this race, but it’s kinda crazy how badly people seem to want to believe this one crazy detail of an already unbelievable conflict

  • a: they’re paraphrasing zelenski there, and,

  • b:

The BBC has not independently verified the claims.

They’re all reporting on the same tweet, it’s not surprising that none of them have been able to verify it

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 15:49 collapse

That really doesn’t change my point. All three articles give the same information.

archomrade@midwest.social on 18 Dec 16:05 collapse

Yea I don’t disagree. It’s just an incredible claim and it’s surprising that it’s apparently not being scrutinized much in the reporting.

People really want to take this as granted, and that’s kinda the point of manufactured consent.

Newsweek has been unable to independently verify the video or Zelensky’s allegations.

Awesome.

But why north koreans and not any other foreign nationals they’ve conscripted/employed?

Maalus@lemmy.world on 18 Dec 23:47 collapse

Because they are insisting the Koreans aren’t fighting so the countries that support Ukraine have plausible deniability and can say they don’t see signs of escalation, despite the fact that NK soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.

rzadkie@lemmy.world on 19 Dec 01:23 collapse

IIRC it was the same story with iranian, north korean and chinese equipment and munitnions yet russians stuck to the narration of domestic production and collective west made an angry face, with a few sactions thrown here and there. I think equipment and ammunition were much greater escalation than boots on the ground, greater in a sense real impact on the war.

Pictures of DNA don’t tell laymen much about who is involved.
