Summary
Jair Bolsonaro faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence after being indicted for allegedly plotting a coup and conspiring to assassinate political opponents.
Experts believe his conviction is likely, accelerating a succession struggle within Brazil’s right wing.
Bolsonaro, already banned from running until 2030, could face over 40 years in jail if found guilty.
Some speculate he may seek asylum abroad, while Trump’s allies could pressure Brazil’s judiciary.

Good, if only the US did this before this shit fiesta started. I hope he gets the maximum sentence but I have a feeling the orange man is gonna try to save him and take him in…
Unlikelly. Bolsonaro has nothing to offer that the Orange Menace wants, not to mention that by being indicted, Bolsonaros’ passport was confiscated a year ago, and he’s under surveilance by the Federal Police.
What amazes me is, my country is infamous for it’s corruption and impunity, especially for politicians, but we’re nearly convicting an ex-president, while such “beacon of democracy” (/s), the US, is quickly decaying into a banana republic.
Lula isn’t feckless, which goes a long way.
It has it's own problems, but many government structures in Brazil were designed to prevent a return to dictatorship after democracy was "restored".
“Tropical Trump” sounds a bit too funny for such an article.
See America? That is how you do it.
America also got this far… just fell short at the sending to jail part.
Perhaps, but our laws ban people who are in trouble with the law™️ from running for office at all.
Bolsonaro literally cannot be president again until he is formally and officially cleared of all charges, which – Yeah, will take a while. Even if he does get away with it (tbh he might. For all my blustering I have very little faith in someone from the ruling caste ever experiencing consequences–), he definitely won’t in time for the next election.
Oh man, i wish the US had those laws.
