French President Emmanuel Macron has said France deployed in the recent hours Rafale fighter jets, anti-air systems and air radars for the purpose of intercepting missiles and drones.

He also confirmed that Paris is sending its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle – the flagship of the French Navy – towards the Mediterranean.

He stressed that the country has defence agreement with Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan and Iraq and it “will show solidary”.

Not sure exactly what France’s goals are. But it was likely a poor choice on Iran’s part to attack Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan, and Iraq.

Sounds like their goals are to hold up their end of the defense agreement with Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan and Iraq.

Iran has gone nuts. Attacking every and anyone has to be the stupidest response to the US/Israel attacks. They’re going to find zero allies. Though I’m not sure Iran has had a lot of allies in the region to begin with. But there’s a difference between “getting no help” and “now fighting 7 nations rather than 2”.

It’s almost like decision-making might be impacted after the country’s entire leadership structure was murdered.

But seriously I think there is a strategy here, which is causing Maximum economic chaos and pain the hopes that Trump will chicken out. It’s not a bad short term strategy but angering other nations may come with longer term downsides.

hopes that Trump will chicken out

At least right now, seems to be having the opposite effect: More U.S. Fighter Aircraft Heading To Middle East which also reports: “France deployed Rafale fighters to the United Arab Emirates for protection of ‘its naval and air bases against Iranian attacks’”.

This is of course on top of OP’s link about France sending a carrier too.

First_Thunder@lemmy.zip on 03 Mar 21:56 collapse

The thing is, if they capitulate, Trump will just pull the rope more, which is why I think they’re betting on maximum economic damage on the one hand to try to get the billionaires mad at Trump, and to try to get the Arab countries to blame Trump for the war on the other

Iran was striking american assets in those countries

RamRabbit@lemmy.world on 03 Mar 20:32 collapse

Iran is attacking much more than that in neighboring gulf countries:

Energy infrastructure and ports around the Gulf are increasingly on the receiving end of Iranian drones and missiles.

“Ownership: Part of the Recurrent Ventures portfolio, which includes other defense-related, publications like Task & Purpose and We Are The Mighty.”… my ten second google search says this is basically a “defense” (read war monger) source. Is that true? If so, i wipe my butt with it.

Part of the reason for american imperialism IS those oil assets (which are de facto american anyways, lets be real). Attacking that infrastructure is strategically smart as it creates far greater penalties than attacking schools and hospitals, like pissramerica is doing. I think it makes great sense for Iran to target those locations, especially because trumps unstated premise for attacking Iran is to have greater control over the global oil supply (amongst other things)

RamRabbit@lemmy.world on 03 Mar 20:46 collapse

Is that true?

The source I linked is full of videos and other sources. Believe what you want.

Iran is attacking many of the gulf states directly and it is forcing countries to move against them, as we see in OP’s link.

choui4@lemmy.zip on 03 Mar 20:48 next collapse

I know but if youre source is indeed from war mongers, its less than useless. Its actively harmful.

Those gulf states had already joined the americunt Imperialist terror regime.

I said it elsewhere and got downvoted for it, but yeah, pretty much. Putting aside how utterly fucked the situation is and how abjectly fucking stupid the orange and Bibi’s regimes are, this is an object lesson in why target discrimination is extremely important: you can turn a nominally neutral party into an actively hostile combatant with the push of a button. Iran has been getting high on their own dogma for so long that it’s evidently divorced them from reality. Leaning into an orgy of violence towards everyone around you that you can hit - instead of focusing it on the people specifically fucking with you - is a one-way ticket to getting regime-changed.

All that said: the US and Israel kicking this idiocy off was deeply fucking stupid for dozens of reasons. The Iranian regime was quite bad for a lot of reasons, but this is just about the worst way they could have addressed that geopolitical sticking point.

Unless I’m mistaken, I’m pretty sure Iran is trying to very carefully target only US infrastructure in those countries (air bases, embassies, consulates, etc…)

It’s a dangerous line to try to tread, but it sends a message that I think they desperately need to send. “We’re not against you, just against the assholes using your land as launching points.”

Frankly I’d do the same thing.

Naw, Iran is directly targeting energy infrastructure and ports in surrounding gulf countries as well.
