As they passed through the village, Khalil holding her phone out the window to film, an Israeli strike hit the car in front of them, Faraj said, speaking from the Beirut hospital where she is recovering.

The women pulled over and got out of the car, hunkering down on the side of the road as a drone remained in the sky overhead. About an hour later, a second strike hit Amal Khalil’s car, next to them.

“Amal was crawling, she was wounded — her nose and head and shoulder and leg,” Faraj recalled, speaking with difficulty with her face swollen and bruised. Faraj said Khalil had also suffered burn wounds after the targeted car next to them caught fire.

The journalists were able to speak with their families and colleagues. Faraj said Khalil had put on a brave face and tried to assure her family that they were fine.

The drone sticking around means someone is still interested in harming the area. It being the front car that got hit probably means they were (mis)identified as being in a convoy. These are clues. Laying in a near by ditch or cover position may have even been interpreted as not something a normal civilian would do.

If you’re in a war zone, you need to code movements to survival, and understand the clues of what’s going on. An area hit, and watched, is likely to be hit again. A convoy that’s only half-destroyed is likely to be hit again. A strike where people are still behaving in an organized defensive manner (holding for an hour in a cover position), rather than leaving, is likely to be hit again.

Because Israel, wants to kill, and harm human beings. But there are clues here for how millitaries operate that you’d want to understand before going in. How/why things are hit, when, and to what goal. They want a road cleared, they’re going to clear it. Get distance.

While everything you’re saying is accurate, Israel has established a concerning trend of outright targeting journalists in this conflict and this has all the hallmarks of that having been the case. So broadly yes make it very clear you’re not a combatant (tbf every kid from this region is taught how to do that, so it’s really unlikely these women were unaware of how to act) but also there’s fuck all you can do about Israel just wanting you dead.
