Palestinian released from Israeli prison describes beatings, sexual abuse and torture (www.haaretz.com)

Among candidates for U.S. sanctions, Israel’s Prison Service should be next on the list. This is apparently the realm where all the sadistic instincts of the minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, find their outlet.

On October 26, large forces of the Prison Service’s Keter unit, a tactical intervention unit, accompanied by dogs, one of them unleashed, stormed into the prison. The wardens and the dogs went on a rampage, attacking the inmates whose screams left the whole prison in a state of terror, Abu Halil recalls. The walls were soon covered with inmates’ blood. “You are Hamas, you are ISIS, you raped, murdered, abducted and now your time has come,” said one warden to the prisoners. The blows that followed were brutal, the inmates were shackled.

The beatings became a daily affair. Occasionally the guards demanded of prisoners that they kiss an Israeli flag and declaim, “Am Yisrael Chai!” – “The People of Israel live.” They were also ordered to curse the prophet Mohammed. The usual call to prayer in the cells was prohibited. The prisoners were afraid to utter any word starting with the sound “h” lest the guards suspect they had said “Hamas.”

On October 29, the inmates of Abu Halil’s cell requested a squeegee to wash the floor. The response to that was to send the terrifying Keter unit into their cell. “Now you will be like dogs,” the guards ordered. The prisoners’ hands were cuffed behind their back. Even before they were shackled, they were ordered to move only with their upper body bent over. They were led to the kitchen, where they were stripped and forced to lie one on top of the other, a pile of 10 naked prisoners. Abu Halil was the last. There, they were beaten with clubs and spat on.

A guard then started to stuff carrots into the anus of Abu Halil and other prisoners. Sitting at home now, reciting his story, Abu Halil lowers his gaze and the flow of words slows down. He’s embarrassed to talk about this. Afterward, he continues, dogs hunched over them and attacked them. They were then allowed to put on their underwear before being led back to their cell, where they found their clothes thrown into a heap.

Tbf a bunch of the israeli prisoners most likely got bombed to death by their own military.

Grimy@lemmy.world on 01 May 00:23 next collapse

There’s a lot more dead Palestinian children than dead Israeli prisoners. Its also hard to pretend Hamas isnt a direct consequence of decades of oppression, or that half the population of Palestine are children and most never even had a chance in the decision yet they are the ones receiving most of the missles.

Or the difference in fire power. Israel could just pull out if they wanted to, the ratio of deaths between both nations is ridiculous.

Sure Hamas sucks but Israel is literally committing genocide with international help. So ya, one side is worse and ignoring the fact is being willfully ignorant. There is nothing to defend here, abusing prisoners is shit and it’s well known that Israel was just grabbing men off the street to toss in jail, so a lot of them probably did nothing to deserve it.

kurwa@lemmy.world on 01 May 00:45 next collapse

Nobody likes seeing woman, LGBTQ and freedom of speech rights getting attacked. Its just any sane person likes genocide even less.

Not to mention Israel essentially created Hamas.

Atin@lemmy.world on 01 May 08:13 next collapse

If Hamas had better weapons they would kill every Christian, Jew and Muslim between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean. They have never made any secret of it and frequently chant about it at anti Israel protests.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world on 01 May 09:49 collapse

And, yet, Hamas somehow never got around to killing Christians in Gaza when they were in power and it ended up being Israel that bombed churches sheltering civilians. How Ironical. washingtonpost.com/…/gaza-church-strike-saint-por…

rottingleaf@lemmy.zip on 01 May 13:20 collapse

This is not entirely correct, Hamas is kinda hostile to Christians too, some more than others. I don’t think there are many Maronites in Gaza, for example. But they are more reasonable than Israelis try to make it seem.

They are just a weaker Muslim version of some imaginary Israel with no counterweights to puppies like Ben-Gvir (sadly not imaginary anymore) and no Western support.

rottingleaf@lemmy.zip on 01 May 08:25 collapse

It’s a typical Israeli\Turkish\Azeri talking point.

Gay etc people are near you, you know some. Thousands of people being intimidated, robbed, abused and murdered are far away.

It’s a way to dehumanize the latter, a very subtle dog whistle for people in the West who indeed are fine with genocide far away.

Through women and gay people etc this makes the society of the perpetrator closer, more alive to you. It becomes “this bright modern country with such nice views and nightlife” versus some dirty stinky villagers trying to ruin that comfort. Makes the perpetrator seem “civilized” (Israelis - civilized, the joke is clear for anyone to experience these people, Azeris - civilized, now that’s postmodernism) and their lives more important. Makes you imagine that you are on their place.

Only in fact, of course, the other side too has nice views, nice homes etc, at least until those get bombed by your nice pictures provider countries. And they don’t hate their women and even gay people (when you don’t call that gay and don’t talk about that) that much.

Stop the war, protect civilians, end the apartheid, make peace and hand Israeli and Palestinian war criminals over to the ICC. Anything else is just prolonging the barbarism.

kurwa@lemmy.world on 01 May 13:23 collapse

If Israel gave Palestinians full rights, Hamas would have never been a thing. I agree that the war should stop, killing each other is never the answer.

Linkerbaan@lemmy.world on 01 May 07:47 next collapse

Yes very sad that israel keeps killing the hostages in Gaza. It seems that Netanyahu hopes to kill them all to remove any reason for protest.

Good thing that Hamas treated their hostages well in captivity though. They won’t lower themselves to the level of barbarism of israel.

We don’t get stories of Hamas cutting off hostages legs like israel does

“Just this week, two prisoners had their legs amputated due to handcuff injuries, which unfortunately is a routine event,” the physician said in the letter. He said inmates are fed through straws, defecate in diapers, and are held constant restraints, which violate medical ethics and the law.

Maybe the “most moral army in the world” should be held to a higher standard than terrorists.

Confused_Emus@lemmy.world on 01 May 08:57 next collapse

Both sides have done some fucked up shit, but let’s not pretend a terrorist attack that killed ~1160 people is on any sort of equal footing with a thinly veiled genocide campaign that has so far wiped out over 35,000 people, about half of which were children.

Let’s not forget we learned soon after Oct 7 that Israel’s government/intelligence was aware of the impending attack and did nothing. I’d wager my next paycheck that Führer Bibi saw the opportunity for an excuse to wipe out Gaza and let it happen.

Israel’s government/intelligence was aware of the impending attack and did nothing

Source?

gastationsushi@lemmy.world on 01 May 13:37 collapse

It’s well known the Israeli government moved troops to the west bank to help settlers and many Israeli allies warned of chatter of an impending attack.

Here’s one story but it’s behind a paywall: haaretz.com/…/0000018b-ed76-d4f0-affb-eff74015000…

Also Israel has delivered cash to hamas to prop them up to justify further violence against Palestinians: nytimes.com/…/israel-qatar-money-prop-up-hamas.ht…

fuckingkangaroos@lemm.ee on 01 May 16:13 collapse

I can’t read the first link because of the paywall, but the summary says some spotters warned something was unusual over the past year but were ignored because they were women. The Israeli government probably got some kind of warning every day even before the attack. Concluding that they knew is a real leap.

Your second link, also paywalled link, says Netanyahu wanted a somewhat strong Hamas in order to keep things stable.

You haven’t supported your claim.

gastationsushi@lemmy.world on 01 May 17:50 collapse

Instead of writing paragraphs complaining that users and sourcing widely understood facts, you can spend a few seconds searching yourself.

I don’t know what you consider a reputable source, but here’s an article about it.

fuckingkangaroos@lemm.ee on 01 May 21:09 collapse

I’ll quote it again

Israel’s government/intelligence was aware of the impending attack and did nothing

I’ve seen the NYT, and it says right in the headline that Israeli officials dismissed it as beyond hamas’ capabilities.

theacharnian@lemmy.ca on 02 May 00:18 collapse

OP has given evidence supporting their claim. The Israelis knew. That they knew and chose to ignore what they knew is exactly what OP is claiming. Not sure what you are sealioning about.

fuckingkangaroos@lemm.ee on 02 May 00:47 collapse

Bullshit. The evidence is that they got information as part of a constant stream of intelligence and incorrectly deemed it unimportant.

OP claimed they knew of an imminent attack, implying they let it happen on purpose so they’d have justification for the current war.

theacharnian@lemmy.ca on 02 May 00:55 collapse

They didn’t imply anything. They were pretty explicit.

They wrote:

Let’s not forget we learned soon after Oct 7 that Israel’s government/intelligence was aware of the impending attack and did nothing. I’d wager my next paycheck that Führer Bibi saw the opportunity for an excuse to wipe out Gaza and let it happen.

You wrote:

“Israel’s government/intelligence was aware of the impending attack and did nothing.” Source?

You didn’t ask for a source for what they conjectured (which would have been fair), you asked for a source for what they based their conjecture on. You have received sources that confirm the basis of the conjecture.

For what it’s worth, I also don’t think Bibi on purpose let shit happen. But he was almost criminally negligent. I think Bibi on purpose chose to take a risk exposing the leftist peacenik kibbutzim at the south close to Gaza to protect the fascist extremists in the colonies. He risked the lives of the “wrong” Israelis to protect the delusions of the “right” Israelis. And now he is making the civilians of Gaza pay for what the Hamas snakes that he incubated for years ended up biting his people.

fuckingkangaroos@lemm.ee on 02 May 04:19 collapse

I think the implication is a bright flashing light you can only miss by choice. And no, nobody has shared a source saying Israel knew of an impending attack and ignored it.

anas@lemmy.world on 01 May 21:22 collapse

propaganda is when they’re torturing prisoners

rottingleaf@lemmy.zip on 01 May 08:14 next collapse

Basically, other things roughly equal, you’re on the wrong side if your side has cowardice more normalized - as in, for example, abusing others while being safe yourself.

ISIS, Hamas etc are already better because those doing the abuse are usually also those who consciously risk their lives.

The criterion is empirical and emotional, but I can’t think of a single case in any war or conflict which would disprove this.

Now, for Israelis (I know being a cowardly bully is only human) this moral distinction doesn’t seem obvious. Actually fighting somebody equal to them is something unthinkable, yet they are proud of their military.

I mean, how can one be proud of the military that squeals for Western help every time an adversary can hurt it (not even defeat it, just the thought that they can be hurt back in something called a war is outrageous for them).

Linkerbaan@lemmy.world on 01 May 09:59 collapse

Yeah I hate ISIS with the same passion as israel. But it’s always hilarious to see people make fun of fighters actually risking their lives on the ground to “come out in the open and stop fighting like cowards” against a drone flying 10 miles high in the sky controlled remotely from half the world away by a dude on an airbase in Texas.

john89@lemmy.ca on 01 May 09:23 next collapse

No way. That’s exactly what the IDF accuses Hamas of doing!

Every accusation is admittance of guilt when dealing with zionists.

Something something something when they love their children more than they hate us. And now they make sure there is another generation with nothing to hope for and nothing else to lose, and who pass on intergenerational trauma to their children.

By the way, this prison system is run by Ben Gvir.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world on 01 May 20:48 collapse

Friendly reminder that Israelis helped run Abu Ghraib

However, similarities between the torture perpetrated against Palestinians now and against Iraqis 20 years before in Iraq come as no surprise. Israel and the torture techniques its intelligence services pioneered over decades of occupation played an important and largely overlooked role in the 2004 Abu Ghraib prison scandal, most notably through the use of sexual humiliation and rape.

Among the contractors interrogating prisoners were employees of the private security firm CACI. One of the interrogators, Eric Fair, was stationed at the Abu Ghraib prison and in the restive city of Fallujah in 2004. He said interrogators in Iraq were taught to use a torture device known as the “Palestinian chair” by the Israeli military during a joint training exercise.
