Will his mom really let him do that?

TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com on 06 May 2026 16:58 collapse

Perhaps Brigitte be old enough to retire ?

RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world on 06 May 2026 18:08 collapse

Didn’t Macron raise the age of retirement for men? /s

Most presidents in America retire from government as well. The only exceptions are when the president becomes a Supreme Court justice.

Do French Presidents ever do anything other than retire?

MastKalandar@feddit.online on 06 May 2026 18:30 next collapse

Look at the title carefully. He says he will leave Politics.

What does that mean now ??

He’s far too young to declare retirement.

Zorque@lemmy.world on 06 May 2026 19:52 next collapse

He’s probably got quite a few oligarchs eager to put him on their board.

He’ll be 50 which isn’t too far from Obama leaving office at 55, and he effectively retired afterwards.

I suspect Macron is much more driven by ambition than Obama was. I doubt he’ll just retire.

onoki@reddthat.com on 07 May 2026 01:36 next collapse

At least in Finland the ex-politicians usually become lobbyists, public speakers and leaders in private organizations.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was similar in France.

Ministers and senators yeah, presidents no.

He’s French, he’s got years of sitting at pavement cafes, drinking espresso and smoking Gitanes to catch up on.

zpiritual@lemmy.ca on 07 May 2026 16:11 collapse

He’ll spin up a consulting company and send invoices for “consulting work” to all the companies with backs he’s been scratching the last decade so they can scratch him back.

Meaning ??🤔🤔🤔

I think they all become de facto members of the conseil constitutionnel and then never actually do anything with it. Which I think would be weird anyway since that would allow them to influence laws after their term.

Uruanna@lemmy.world on 07 May 2026 14:40 collapse

That’s the point, they have no incentive to abuse it - also it’s mostly an advisory position, saying “nope, this law you’re trying to pass is unconstitutional, this line can’t stay”. They don’t actually do anything themselves, and I’ve never heard of a case of someone trying to bribe them to reject something.

Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 07 May 2026 16:43 collapse

Clearly since Chirac and Sarkozy didn’t seem to find any way to abuse it, I assume the system is working

iglou@programming.dev on 07 May 2026 09:59 collapse

Macron is particularly young for a president. His political career peaked really quickly, and it can’t really go higher. But I suspect he has other ambitions now. Retiring so early doesn’t make sense for someone who’s driven by ambition.

jobbies@lemmy.zip on 07 May 2026 05:34 next collapse

Oh yes and they all keep their promises.

Best news of the day. Can’t wait 2027.

CyroSignal@lemmy.world on 07 May 2026 09:16 next collapse

I already knew that because I’m French.

FortyTwo@lemmy.world on 07 May 2026 10:44 next collapse

Right, just like Mark Rutte left politics to become a full-time secondary school teacher after his last cabinet

Akasazh@lemmy.world on 07 May 2026 13:15 collapse

How could he refuse the job of rimjob specialist to the orange crybaby

BaraCoded@literature.cafe on 07 May 2026 14:04 collapse

It’d be better if he could leave life altogether.
