Haven’t we seen this film once already?

At least twice.

The title “Putin calls Taliban Russia’s ally in combating terrorism” is both misleading and a classic example of sensationalism. Putin didn’t outright call the Taliban an “ally.” He merely noted their control and interest in Afghan stability, which happens to coincide with Russia’s anti-terrorism goals.

But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good headline, right?

RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world on 05 Jul 2024 21:31 next collapse

Did you read the article? There’s a direct quote at the very beginning.

Looks like someone’s quick to play the paycheck card whenever their sensationalist nonsense gets called out. Just because I’m not buying into overblown headlines doesn’t mean I’m on someone’s payroll lol. Maybe try engaging with the facts instead of resorting to cheap shots.

RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world on 05 Jul 2024 21:37 collapse

I sure did. Did you read the article? You’re nitpicking. He said what he said.

Invalid_hihdk_263637@lemy.lol on 05 Jul 2024 21:43 collapse

Actually, I did read the article. You clearly didn’t, since you missed that the headline is not a direct quote. Putin acknowledged the Taliban’s control and their interest in stability, which aligns with Russia’s goals, but didn’t flat-out call them an “ally.”

If pointing out these facts is nitpicking, maybe you need to brush up on your reading comprehension before defending misleading headlines.

RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world on 05 Jul 2024 21:53 collapse

He really did call them allies, and I have this quote both in Russian and in English. No matter how you slice it it says what it says. Moreover, this in not his first acknowledgement of potential cooperation, it’s been going on for quite some time now.

Invalid_hihdk_263637@lemy.lol on 05 Jul 2024 21:58 collapse

If you genuinely believe Putin called the Taliban “allies,” you must be reading a different script. He mentioned their control and stability role, not a formal alliance. Misinterpreting statements to fit your narrative doesn’t make them true. Maybe next time, try actually understanding the context instead of cherry-picking quotes. Don’t bother to reply btw

RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world on 05 Jul 2024 22:01 next collapse

I’ll remind you when the formal alliance will be finalized since MID is already working on excluding them from the terrorist list.

Weslee@lemmy.world on 06 Jul 2024 04:44 collapse

No one here is saying they have formed a formal alliance (yet). It’s funny how you say he mentions “control”, and “stability”, then did your eyes shield you from the next line?

"… the Taliban are certainly our allies in the fight against terrorism… "

Literally says they are his allies in a quote taken directly from the shitheads’ mouth.

You can try twist it in your mind however you want, but no one is as stupid as you, and we can actually read.

rdri@lemmy.world on 05 Jul 2024 22:29 next collapse

Russia’s anti-terrorism goals

You’ll say this is a quote. The fact that you rely on this very phrase is hilarious. Either Putin equals Russia for you or you accept that he is not a terrorist.

The one where ISIS exists and attacked Moscow’s Crocus City Hall theater in March. IIRC the Taliban and ISIS aren’t best friends because ISIS sees them as resting on their laurels and wanting to stabilize their control of Afghanistan rather than expanding and building an Islamic State.

ISIS -K does terror attacks all over the region. Taliban fights ISIS-K.

This is not news for anyone slightly informed about the region. Are people going to be surprised we worked with Iran to fight ISIS next?
