The scary thing about Taiwan is that both sides probably believe backing down would make them look weak, which is exactly how situations become dangerous even when nobody actually wants a war.

Trump already backed down from Biden’s stance of protecting Taiwan.

Telodzrum@lemmy.world on 14 May 17:31 collapse

It’s not “Biden’s stance” he abandoned. It’s five decades of US foreign policy, unbroken by change of administration or party allegiance. What Trump did was much larger than changing posture from the previous President; it was a seismic shift in American strategic vision and posture.

Before Biden the US was ambiguous about it. Trump returned to that.

What exactly do you think that sailing the entire Seventh Fleet through the Strait of Taiwan every time Beijing so much as glances at the island meant in IR circles?

You’re out of your depth.

War with China would get folks to stop talking about the Trump/Epstein files for a couple of minutes.

Drusas@fedia.io on 15 May 00:50 next collapse

This can easily be avoided by China not attacking Taiwan.
