Israel bombs 6th UN-run school in Gaza in 10 days, kills dozens (www.aljazeera.com)

Israel’s military has bombed another United Nations-run school as well as an Israeli-designed “safe-zone” in the Gaza Strip, killing at least 42 Palestinians and wounding dozens of others, according to Palestinian officials.

The Israeli attacks on Tuesday hit the UN’s al-Razi school in the central Nuseirat refugee camp and a main street lined with market stalls in the southern al-Mawasi area, where thousands of displaced Palestinians had sought shelter.

One could wonder why israel keeps designating “Hamas bases” as safe zones after they claim to have fully cleared those areas out.

Almost like israel is just terror bombing schools full of children for no reason except being a Nazi terror state.

Deceptichum@quokk.au on 17 Jul 2024 09:52 next collapse

Schools and an education population are important for a society. It’s part of Israel’s systematic campaign of attacking every institution of Palestine.

Don’t even know the words you’re using. Unless you’re in Gaza, you should go to school.

ASDraptor@lemmy.autism.place on 17 Jul 2024 10:45 next collapse

I know, right? You bomb schools and kill tens of thousands of people in the middle of an ethnic cleanse and people have the audacity of calling you a nazi terror state.

The nerve of these people!

Nah mate, I’m pretty sure Israel is a nazi state. We should give them the nazi treatment seeing how hard they try to be called nazis. But it’s very simple to stop being called nazi. You just need to stop your ethnic cleanse in Palestine.

doodledup@lemmy.world on 19 Jul 2024 15:37 collapse

It’s not a Nazi state. You’re just wrong about the definition. It might be a racist, and terrible state or whatever. But that doesn’t make it a Nazi state.

ASDraptor@lemmy.autism.place on 17 Jul 2024 11:11 collapse

Look, I’m not saying they hit that school (or the previous 5) by mistake, but how can they know that a building called school, managed by the UN, full of children seated in classrooms with teachers teaching stuff to said children, in a zone designated by Israel as a safe zone is actually a school?

They couldn’t know! Nobody could!

None of those schools are active. They’re currently shelters for families.

Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world on 17 Jul 2024 17:04 next collapse

Well that makes it alright then! Nobody could possibly object to families sheltering in a so-called safe zone being killed by the very people who designated it as such and told them to go there!

And I would say “a school” vs a “a school building currently hosting refugee families” is a very minor component of the larger story that “a nation has been bombing those civilian buildings full of non-combatants in established safe zones”.

Unfortunately, education in Gaza has been directly linked to the incitement of terrorism. In Gaza the children read textbooks in school containing hateful, antisemitic messaging along with encouraging martyrdom and jihad.

The issue is why the school materials are radicalized in the first place.

If Israel, you know, would treat the Palestinians like human beings instead of blockading them from all aid and support for 30 years, maybe they wouldn’t face a radicalization threat.

Two wrongs don’t make a right. I was highlighting to the OP why education (in this instance) isn’t actually reducing bigotry and hate like it would in many other cases, but instead making the problem worse.

Besides, the issue with problematic materials in teaching is hardly limited to Gaza.

south africa and ireland are taking them to international court, but at the end of the day, it is the countries that actually have people/resources/power to enforce the court’s orders. And nobody is willing to invade Israel to bring them to justice (and bring their leadership to the courthouse). Almost all countries in the UN signed treaties promising they would enforce arrest orders, but when push comes to shove, nobody wants to be the one to do it. Israeli offivials can go visit their allies freely

Linkerbaan@lemmy.world on 17 Jul 2024 17:11 next collapse

Not just that. Israel designated this as a safe zone and told civilians to flee here.

So Israel gathers Palestinian civilians in their concentration camp in a designated building, and then systematically slaughters them after telling them they are safe there…

Seemingly not for much longer, though, what with the ICC arrest warrants and the US pretending harder than ever to be neutral.

They’re doing their best. Since the people tracking the death toll have been bombed into the dirt and the majority of residences in the gaza strip have been completely demolished, the actual toll of this conflict is a lot more than the commonly cited 30,000+. In Gaza, 2 Million Palestinians lived in high density, and the Israeli military pushed them into camps near Rafah which they’ve also started striking.

If the conflict suddenly ends, though, so will Netanyahu’s power grab, so he’s dragging it out.
