With just under two months until the start of the 2026 World Cup, it seems that FIFA executives have finally looked up at the horizon, seen the looming shitstorm, and are now scrambling to head it off. The Athletic reported on Tuesday that top FIFA heads have sought to convince Gianni Infantino to make a “president-to-president” appeal to Donald Trump and ask if he can find it in his heart of hearts to give his ICE jackboots a summer vacation.

Specifically, the idea FIFA wants Infantino to run by Trump is that there be a full moratorium on ICE activities in the United States for the 39-day duration of the World Cup. From The Athletic’s report:

“The Athletic has been told Infantino informed senior FIFA management he was receptive to this idea and he would seek to make a president-to-president ask of Trump to reduce ICE’s role during the tournament. […] It is not known at this stage whether Infantino has yet made the request, or if he will follow through on it, or indeed whether the White House would be prepared to countenance such a request regarding domestic policy in the United States from FIFA.”

This story turning into a “Leopards at my face” in 3…2…1…

What’s the chance he says yes and then just fucking puts all of the foreign athletes in concentration camps anyway? 🤔

Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz on 15 Apr 02:17 next collapse

Not just the athletes, thousands will be travelling to America to watch the soccer games. I’ve helped a couple people navigate applying for a tourist visa, its kinda insane how expensive and needlessly time-consuming it is. You have to go to the US embassy for an in-person interview.

Drusas@fedia.io on 15 Apr 05:33 collapse

A lot of visas require in-person interviews, and not just American ones.

Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz on 15 Apr 05:38 next collapse

For tourist visas? Which countries? I’ve never had to do one, and people I talk to only had to do similar things for Japan. Though admittedly I’ve only had to actually fill out a handful of visa applications because US passport is absurdly strong.

stumu415@lemmy.zip on 15 Apr 06:08 collapse

Maybe for US citizens because of the threat level they pose on the general intelligence of the nation they want to visit. Even China is visa free for 50 countries now including all of Europe and Canada.

I don’t remember doing an interview for my L visa. Just brought in the passport, had biometrics taken, and came back a few days later to pick it up.

Getting to that stage was annoying, I had to resubmit the application online like 6 times before they ran out of nitpicks to complain about.

It’s all just a reality show to him, so that would just be another episode…

AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 17:11 collapse

I was just gonna say this lol. He’ll agree and probably get some payoff money but then go ahead and arrest athletes. Shit maybe they’ll have a polymarket bet on the winner and just detain the opposing teams.

This story is wonderfully written.

For FIFA, that’s basically the Socialist Revolution.

And no, I still hate FIFA.

The credibility is long lost for both award producer and award consumer. Even if the Orange somehow agrees, it won’t change anything as everybody knows he’s a demented liar.

Akasazh@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 06:21 next collapse

Infantino to find out that als his brown nosing will have little effect on the orange baby.

Knowing that the best place to scratch Trump is always his ego

That doesn’t work a second time. Now he’ll have to give Trump a cut of the profits and haggle over the percentage.

i suggest forming blockades where the fifa tournaments are behing held to get the point across.

Buffalox@lemmy.world on 15 Apr 07:33 next collapse

Just stay far far away from the World Cup this year. It’s simply not worth it.

FIFA just getting what they deserve.

“39-day duration” : you better take your flight back right after the finale! Stay another day and boom! you’re deported or in jail for 2 months

/c/nottheonion material.

We need to broadcast to the world that visiting the USA for the game is unsafe. Make it EXTREMELY clear that people should not come here. Show videos and pictures of ICE agents detaining people. Broadcast stories of legal immigrants being detained. I don’t have the heart to source the videos and articles now, but I think this is a spot where FIFA and MAGA could both be burned.

Major events like the World Cup are desired specifically as a source of international tourism; and without those tourists, they’re just a major financial hit.

FIFA doing the wrost thing they can do! Praise the idiot instead of giving the matches to Canada or Mexico.

Pretty sure suicide bombing or driving a truck into a Christmas festival is terrorism, and enforcing your country’s border law by removing people who cross the border illegally is not terrorism.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz on 15 Apr 15:39 next collapse

Most of the people being harassed haven’t crossed it illegally. A lot of them are citizens, many others entered legally but overstayed their welcome. But they really only check for skin color, not immigration status, when they decide whether to ruin your day and potentially your life.

zalgotext@sh.itjust.works on 15 Apr 15:49 next collapse

Does kidnapping and murdering American citizens count as domestic terrorism, or do you only care about the oh so fragile sanctity of Christmas

Hey friend, I am so sorry that you live in interesting times. This isn’t the merry times where it’s possible to be both ignorant and blissful at the same time. This is the age of propaganda, arrogance, and blissful incompetence. Your stupidity is used against you, these days. When your leaders find a way to enrich themselves, they also seek ways to massage faux grievances into their followers minds for the purpose of justification. You become the point on their spear, albeit a pretty dull point. They’ve discovered, however, even dull points are effective for bludgeoning.
