The world needs to take the threat of the US very, very seriously. Don’t assume that upcoming US elections will fix the problem. There’s no guarantee those elections will even take place. Take steps to protect yourselves now.

Bonifratz@piefed.zip on 05 Jan 12:01 next collapse

Canada would be wise to build nukes ASAP.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca on 05 Jan 13:40 next collapse

Oh sure, genius move eh, hmmm…what happened when Iran or Cuba tried to acquire nukes?

rayyy@piefed.social on 05 Jan 14:08 collapse

What happened when Israel and North Korea tried to build nukes?

AlDente@sh.itjust.works on 06 Jan 22:09 collapse

Furthermore, what happened after Gaddafi gave up on Libya’s nukes?

Tap for spoiler

He was raped in the ass with a bayonet after the US and the rest of NATO helped overthrow his government.

Nukes are clearly a deterrent, and if you comply with disarmament you’re more likely to be backstabbed. Yet, the US won’t mess with those who remain nuclear armed like Israel and North Korea.

Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 05 Jan 23:09 collapse

At the very least, allow their citizens to αrm themseIves again.

shalafi@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 23:30 next collapse

They didn’t have a gun problem to begin with yet recently laid some of the most draconian bans on Earth. Only Australia (now) and Britain are worse.

jaxxed@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 07:52 next collapse

Many Canadians own firearms

Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Jan 17:24 collapse

That is technically true but their options have become extremely limited.

Nalivai@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 20:36 collapse

And this is only one of may many ways why Canada is so much better country than whatever the fuck is happening south of them

Nalivai@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 14:38 next collapse

That doesn’t help in a modern war. If the threat was a bunch of random people with spears and muskets, yes, arming citizens is the play. When the threat is bombs and drones, giving everyone a broomstick will achieve exactly nothing.
Edit: was going to write boomstick, but this one works just as well.

Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Jan 19:56 collapse

You’re not wrong.

Randomgal@lemmy.ca on 06 Jan 17:40 collapse

So what? They can shoot at the supersonic missiles? At the swarma of drones? At the stealth bombers?

The civil war was a long time ago.

Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 06 Jan 19:55 collapse

For the illusion that they have a chance?

Nalivai@lemmy.world on 07 Jan 10:07 collapse

I mean, they do have a chance. I don’t think it will be good, but I don’t envision Canada just rolling over when orange platoons will start bombing them, I expect they will fight back, and even though US is that much more militaristic, Canada isn’t toothless.
The chance isn’t particularly big though.

UnspecificGravity@piefed.social on 05 Jan 12:11 next collapse

It’s also finish to assume that this isn’t what Americans want.

TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 12:25 collapse

Some Americans absolutely want this. But, yes, it’s probably not a majority. Of course, I don’t think the majority can, or will, do anything about it.

wewbull@feddit.uk on 05 Jan 12:35 next collapse

Most don’t have international relations on their radar, or if they do they think it’s tariffs that have soured relationships.

TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 12:57 collapse

Exactly. The majority aren’t going to take action against something that isn’t on their radar. The majority may just be along for the ride, but that doesn’t change the destination.

CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de on 05 Jan 13:22 next collapse

I don’t think that a majority really sees a problem with the USA throwing their weight around.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca on 05 Jan 13:39 collapse

Majority voted Trump, twice.

thejml@sh.itjust.works on 05 Jan 14:02 collapse

Actually, thats false. Not that it matters. Hillary had more votes than Trump in that race. And besides that, with a roughly a third of people not voting, no one truly had the Majority of Americans… just the majority of Americans that gave enough of a crap about their country and future of the world to get off their ass and vote.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca on 05 Jan 13:38 collapse

Exactly how? How does one protect themselves from the largest military in history with trillions in budget? And what do we use? Almost all munitions are made in US or controlled by US.

mrdown@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 13:46 next collapse

That is what happen when we are too selfish. Countries been fine with americans terrorism till the threat because about them

Martin Niemöller quote apply here

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 13:47 next collapse

Are the other of the nations of the world really so helpless? Hopeless? If you want to roll over and die, that’s up to you, but if it were me, I would fight to the death, even and especially if it were a lost cause. I mean, look at the guerilla fighters who fought back against the mighty US in Vietnam or Iraq. They gave the US hell and they sure didn’t have trillions of dollars to work with. Sure, the guerilla fighters lost a lot, but they made damn certain that America didn’t “win.”

Randomgal@lemmy.ca on 05 Jan 22:05 collapse

Bro swallowed American propaganda line hook and sinker.

The US is far from invincible, and weapons are not needed. The reason the US continues to do whatever it wants is because either countries don’t offer any retaliation at all.

When sanctions start finally coming against the US. They’ll realize all they have been destroying is the stool they were standing on.

The US as it is today can’t exist without trade. It is not self sufficient and the largest army in the world is useless if you can’t feed them.

Don’t be brainwashed into thinking facism can’t be stopped.

verdi@feddit.org on 06 Jan 07:48 collapse

There are many ways to stop the us on their tracks, their supply chain is impossibly weak due to years of profiteering and centralization. Within a couple of months, even Denmark, with only 6M inhabitants, could paralize the US quite easily. The US swings the largest hammer in the world but the arm that wields it is impossibly brittle and full of weaknesses.

cheesybuddha@lemmy.world on 05 Jan 20:28 next collapse

Large scale weapons tooling and manufacturer with the entire supply chains outside of the US.

Sorry to say, but it looks like the world is going to need to start gearing up for war.

Sio Silica is trying very hard to put their foot in Manitoba’s door and start extracting a shitload of silica from Manitoba’s water tables. They are a private Canadian company but dicking around with water tables scares me. The potential damage could be excruciating.

Before Trump version .2 beta male, this was a decent alliance between America, Canada, and Australia to expand rare earth mining to combat China.

Now it’s all thrown away by fragile ego Americans and Nazis. Great job there guys.

Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works on 05 Jan 19:15 next collapse

He’s gonna try something, and I believe he’ll start by attacking Quebec since the rest of Canada wont really mind and that will give him control on energy.

Seriously, fuck the USA and it’s selfish braindead population of pedo-lovers.

Alberta is where most of the oil is, and Danielle Smith and the other Cons are buddy buddy with Trump. Wouldn’t be surprised if they show up on a certain island’s logbook either. They’re already trying to break away so I expect Danielle will trade it all for a funnel cake and a firm handshake

Mpatch@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 02:02 collapse

Loool thar garbage ass oil that there is only one refinery on this side if the world that can refine it some where in the states and they don’t even want it? That shit oil?

puppinstuff@lemmy.ca on 06 Jan 00:45 next collapse

Attacking the maple syrup cartels would be starting the game on nightmare difficulty.

PlaidBaron@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 01:55 collapse

Why the fuck would we not mind if Quebec was attacked? Its a part of Canada. Yeah we might trash talk the Quebecois but we wouldnt be ok with them being attacked.

This is the most braindead take Ive seen in a long time.

Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works on 06 Jan 14:50 collapse

Lol, Trump official have mentioned Quebec numerous times, suggesting they need to free the people from high taxes rates. Electricity, water and aluminum are all resources cited by the fascists, that they wanted more control on.

Overall it’s a question of acceptability, if the US needs to wipe out a part of the Canadian population to show how serious they are, the rest of Canada would mostly agree to throw Quebec under the bus. I’ve been all around the country and there is absolutely no doubt about that in my mind.

TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works on 06 Jan 17:46 next collapse

This sounds like something a fake Canadian would say.

I have as many jokes about Francophones as they have for anglophones. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to bend over and let Americans walk into this country. Anywhere.

PlaidBaron@lemmy.world on 06 Jan 21:28 collapse

This is the dumbest shit Ive read in a while.

Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works on 06 Jan 22:53 collapse

Eloquent. I’ve live in BC, Ontario and QC and I’ve seen enough to know the ROC won’t lift a finger for Quebec. Canada would already be a full blown conservative country if it wasn’t from Quebec. Bonne chance
