Ukrainian president says plan would not be fair without guarantees that Russia would not simply take over zone
The US wants Ukraine to withdraw its troops from the Donbas region, and Washington would then create a “free economic zone” in the parts Kyiv currently controls, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.
Previously, the US had suggested Kyiv should hand over the parts of Donbas it still controlled to Russia, but the Ukrainian president said on Thursday that Washington had now suggested a compromise version in which Ukrainian troops would withdraw, but Russian troops would not advance into the territory.
“Who will govern this territory, which they are calling a ‘free economic zone’ or a ‘demilitarised zone’ – they don’t know,” said the Ukrainian president, speaking with journalists in Kyiv on Thursday.

“Free economic zone” raises my hackles. Is this a technical geopolitical term or is it really just gonna be the Corporation Wars zone?
EDIT: I think I was kind of thinking of “Free trade zones” which this is not. So who knows what they’re talking about.
Isn’t this almost literally the plot of the new Superman movie? A billionaire [not Trump, someone else pulling strings] carves out a portion of a country intentionally made war-torn for their own gain?

There’s a ‘free zone’ in Belize that ahh… It’s like a pustulant blister of capitalism. It’s gross. Feels gross. Everywhere that isn’t actively selling shit is a literal garbage dump, and there’s a ton of building carcasses with faded signs falling off of them. Looks like in its heyday it was at best a sleazy strip mall.

These “peace plans” are deliberately humiliating and dumb. Time to stop inviting the US to the negotiating table.
Problem is that the Great Bozo the Orange keeps showing up and Russia likes him there because they think he’s funny.
The more stupid Russia makes Trump look, the better it is for them. The entire objective is to fully destroy America’s reputation in the world. They’ve already done that with spectacular success, now they’re just piling on.
It’ll just raise the US’s reputation even more when it finally stirs from its lethargy and cleans house.
Or ruin it even more when they squander that opportunity, like they did during the Biden administration.

I think you’re confused: this is a proxy war between the US/NATO and Russia, using mostly Ukrainian lives. The big boys table involves Trump and Putin, lol, they’re the decision makers here, Zelensky is just a handpicked puppet. 🤷
Trump’s USA is most definitely not on NATO’s or Ukraine’s side(s).

I don’t see that they have any choice but to keep fighting.
Which gives Russia the excuse it wants to attack and try and take more land.
Just like the lopsided cease fire in Gaza that the US “brokered” gave the IDF a bunch of excuses that they still managed to massively overreach.

I think it’s the other way around. Trump’s trying to force Ukraine to surrender before the Europeans get their fingers out and confiscate frozen Russian oligarch assets. Because when that happens, the slowly deteriorating Russian position will rapidly worsen.
Russia and USA can get fucked, and I say this as a US citizen. Trump didn’t just suck Clinton’s dick, he’s still sucking Putin’s dick.

Let’s guess who will be extracting the profit from that “free” (as in Trump doesn’t have to pay for it) zone. It sure as shit won’t be the Ukrainians.
The Ukrainians haven’t been profiting from anything in Ukraine since 1990.
Inflation-adjusted GDP PPP in 1990 was $1.2 trillion, it collapsed after the dismantling of the Soviet system, and by 2022 it still hadn’t recovered to 2/3rd of what it was in Soviet times as it was below $800bn. And this is even before taking into account the massive inequality that was created at the time and has perpetuated itself. Sadly, Ukrainians have suffered immensely in the economic sphere since 35 years ago.
