Protective helmets were donned and sledgehammers wielded as Elon Musk critics vented their frustration at the Tesla boss and billionaire by smashing up a disused Tesla bound for the scrapheap.

The public art project was organised by the social media campaign group Everyone Hates Elon. A 2014 Tesla Model S was provided by an anonymous donor “to create a debate about wealth inequality”, a spokesperson for the group said.

The participants gathered at Hardess Studios in south London on Thursday to take it in turns to swing at the car with sledgehammers and baseball bats. The destroyed electric vehicle, which retails for about £14,000, will be auctioned in the next few weeks, with all proceeds going to food bank charities.

I like it, but feel the impact is somehow lessened because it a public free event.

In my mind, if someone asked me “do you want to take a hammer to this car? It’s for an event, it’s all authorised and you won’t get into any trouble” it wouldn’t matter what car, or even thing it was, I’d probably have a bit of fun letting off steam.

Putting 50 pounds entry on it though (with 100% of proceeds going to a relevant charity) would show intent. You’re not just breaking something you were allowed to, you paid good money to go and wreck that thing.

50 seems a bit high as a non-UK maybe 5-20 depending on how many swings you want to take at it?

What’s the price for pissing on it?

You can volunteer to be part of the fire brigade watching over the event.

£15, but if it catches fire as a result you have to put it out. No fair letting the thing destroy itself when so many people pay good money to do it themselves.

Seems a bit pointless and indulgent.

Hopefully that’s a test run for the dealerships

Don’t forget the manufacturing plants.

Performative rubbish meant to inflate egos, not further the cause.

Art is performative.

Would be more impressed if they did this to Elon himself.

Yeah this reminds me of all those youtube channels smashing iphones and androids for content. It was a functional device… i would never drive one, but someone could have used it. Now its just waste. I hope they at least recycled it properly.

Edit* they only specify the battery was recycled.

Someone could have used it. Now its just waste.

It’s mentioned 4 times in the article it was headed for the scrapyard, including the sentence you got your info about the battery from. That’s almost impressive…

They raise money for a good cause, which is way better than one of these dipshit mobiles

she took a hammer to the car’s bonnet as Britney Spears’s Hit Me Baby One More Time blared from a speaker.

Ahaha I can just picture that.
