Mediators say more talks to be held next week but no clear evidence two sides any closer on uranium enrichment

High-stakes talks between the US and Iran over the future of Tehran’s nuclear programme ended on Thursday without a deal, as the White House weighs a military operation that would mark its largest intervention in the Middle East in decades.

The Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, claimed “good progress” had been made at the talks and Omani mediators predicted negotiations would reconvene at a technical level next week in Vienna.

But there was no immediate evidence to support suggestions that the two sides had drawn closer on the fundamental issues of Iran’s right to enrich uranium and the future of its highly enriched uranium stocks.

I really wish media would stop using the word “deal”. It’s become so fucking mainstream that it means anything from capitulation, to strong arming, to bribes, to outright corruption. It feeds into trumpism and the concept that he plays 3D chess or some bullshit. Usually it involves the toddler thinking he won, and sometimes it does. But the word “deal” now gives me a knee jerking reaction that makes me ask, "ok let’s go through this, is it fair or is someone getting fucked, or is this simply dystopian hell for the citizenship?’

There was a solid, enforcable, internationally recognized deal that all credible experts agree was working and keeping iran's nuclear industry civilian. Whatever happened to that?
