Americans applying for Canadian refugee status in increasing numbers: data (www.ctvnews.ca)

More Americans applied for refugee status in Canada in the first half of 2025 than in all of 2024, and more than in any full year since 2019, according to data published on Thursday by Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board.

Their share of total refugee claims - 245 of about 55,000 - is small and Canada’s acceptance of U.S. refugee claims has historically been low. Asylum-seekers from other countries crossing the land border from the U.S. are sent back under a bilateral agreement with the reasoning that they should apply for asylum in the first “safe” country they arrived in.

Last year 204 people filed refugee claims in Canada with the United States as their country of alleged persecution. Claims from the U.S. also rose during the first Trump administration.

Oh so “America first” in immigration as well?

Only MURICANS can immigrate and should get refugee status

American exceptionalism can suck my dick.

It’s a dried up corpse. It ain’t sucking shit.

It says in the article that the number of American requests are still quite low, and are generally denied anyway. They have to prove that nowhere in the US is safe for them, and the high level position of Canada, for the time being, is that the US is not an unsafe country (otherwise they couldn’t defer other refugees here).

Guess trans people should fuck off and die.

As someone else said, they are getting denied. There are many many more disgusting examples of those American exceptionalist attitudes that make more sense to get your jimmies rustled about, just look in any direction.

I would guess that most of the people applying are representative of populations that do legitimately feel unsafe in the US right now (or at least less safe than, say, a year ago). It just doesn’t rise to the established standards in Canada, which, admittedly, exist for obvious reasons. Someday they might. I hope I’m wrong, but these couple hundred applicants are probably a bellwether and this conversation about people fleeing the US for greener pastures seems likely to continue.

And hey, it doesn’t cost them anything and I’m pretty sure there’s no penalty from Canada for claiming asylum and not getting it, beyond just not getting it and some human having to waste their time processing these. It’s better that the process is there than for it to not be.

Lastly, we shouldn’t get to decide whether people feel safe or not, it’s not your choice to make and we kind of just have to believe them unless they’re clearly just trolls doing it as some kind of weird stunt for Internet likes. I’m not saying that’s what you’re doing here, but I’ve seen a lot more of it about, it’s a feature of this cruel time we find ourselves in. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if there are a handful of people who applied just to troll or “pErSeCuTeD fOr BeInG ChRiStIaN” types in the mix also though.

So you believe that people applying for refugee status in the US and getting deported don’t have legitimate reasons.

Gross.

It is exceptionalism after all.

some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world on 27 Aug 2025 15:05 collapse

That is almost the opposite of what I said.

gaybriel_fr_br@jlai.lu on 27 Aug 2025 15:09 collapse

You legitimised the Americans’ reasons for needing a refuge in Canada.

All while your country is actively shipping “immigrants” to Guantanamo bay and other concentration camps, or Uganda.

The irony is certainly lost on you, due to your blind belief that America deserves what it doesn’t give others. It’s pretty clearly visible.

Confused_Emus@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 23 Aug 2025 18:08 next collapse

I’d imagine the Americans applying for refugee status are among those who also aren’t spouting the usual American exceptionalism bullshit. There’s a reason they’re trying to get out of the country. We’re not a monolith, after all.

MossyFeathers@pawb.social on 23 Aug 2025 18:24 collapse

Ah, yes, as someone who doesn’t believe in borders, I too hate immigrants and believe only myself am worthy of being a refugee.

I didn’t want what is happening in the US and I voted against it. We are not a monolithic, unified society.

Meh if they’re trans or Latino I say let them.

Bill C-2 will make everything much harder for migrants (and every Canadian who gives a fuck about their own privacy) though.

Thank you for telling us about C-2…

Here cbc.ca/…/bill-c2-is-anti-refugee-and-anti-immigra… identifies some of the implications better for us non-lawyers…
