Lol, looks like Xi’s entered his paranoia phase just like Stalin did. Good stuff.

Eldritch@piefed.world on 25 Jan 23:45 next collapse

“Strongmen” always do. Maga is largely in it as well currently.

partial_accumen@lemmy.world on 26 Jan 02:15 next collapse

So this new general is joining a long line of no-longer-useful 2nd in commands just like Trotsky, Ernst Röhm, and Prigozhin.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 26 Jan 03:09 collapse

I disagree on the MAGA part. MAGA is currently preparing for a coup, so they need ideologically compliant sycophants at the top levels of power. That's not paranoia; it's a pragmatic and effective strategy.

Eldritch@piefed.world on 26 Jan 04:50 next collapse

Disagree all you want. They fired plenty of military staff and even been polygraphing non-military staff trying to root out the constant leaks from their ranks. The coup is largely over already.

Gathorall@lemmy.world on 26 Jan 06:46 collapse

For what it is worth USA did require a purge before entering the bold civil oppression phase.

Eldritch@piefed.world on 26 Jan 13:27 collapse

Indeed.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online on 26 Jan 05:52 collapse

If Maga were either pragmatic or effective they would not need to constantly purge.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 26 Jan 06:16 collapse

My impression is that they've been purging people from past administrations, not their own appointees. If that's off the mark I'll have to rethink my position, but so far the purges can be explained by how they likely want high-ranking bureaucrats and military officers to be solidly in their camp.

This wave is likely not as paranoud as you may think. I’ve seen a number of utube commentators talking about a large power struggle in the CCP over the last six months.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online on 26 Jan 05:56 collapse

I struggle to see it. It’s the same group of people that allowed Xi Jinping to become president for life in the first place. They’ve all been reaping the rewards of recent conquests, and even though they’ve continued the trend of cruelty this time they haven’t lost any global market shares.

The only thing that could convince me that his rule is actually at risk is a boatload of evidence that somebody in the party had adequate ability and desire to completely replace him OR internal documents showing that officials were afraid of the administration heavily pushing toward WWIII with their support of Russia and Iran as well as their psyops throughout the west, namely TikTok.

I remember reading this like 5 years ago? There was another power struggle and Xi won and rooted out all opposition.

I guess these guys changed their minds lately

jaxxed@lemmy.world on 26 Jan 14:41 collapse

When Xi was picked, he was picked for the same reasons that Putin was picked - they looked like mild centrist candidates (ironic) Over the last decade, Xi hss focused a lot more on gaining authoritarian control over the party, the military, and the economy - using the law, and power plays. This has taken a lot of power from both the Capitalists, and the princelings.

Ask Jack Ma if he is still happy with Xi.

FiniteBanjo@feddit.online on 26 Jan 20:48 collapse

I’m sure it takes a village, but Xi is an elite autocrat. There is no shadow government picking him, he is the one who picks.

jaxxed@lemmy.world on 27 Jan 07:26 collapse

The CCP is not a transparent governing body, by any means, but there is no second body of officials pulling strings. There is no need for a hidden government, as much of the CCP’s dynamics is hidden anyway. Most public decision making is ceremonial, with decisions being made in advance, and opposition being rare.

Xi was picked for succession by his predecessor, Hu.
