The world “may not have time” to prepare for the safety risks posed by cutting-edge AI systems, according to a leading figure at the UK government’s scientific research agency.
David Dalrymple, a programme director and AI safety expert at the Aria agency, told the Guardian people should be concerned about the growing capability of the technology.
"I think we should be concerned about systems that can perform all of the functions that humans perform to get things done in the world, but better,” he said. “We will be outcompeted in all of the domains that we need to be dominant in, in order to maintain control of our civilisation, society and planet.”
“I would advise that things are moving really fast and we may not have time to get ahead of it from a safety perspective,” he said. “And it’s not science fiction to project that within five years most economically valuable tasks will be performed by machines at a higher level of quality and lower cost than by humans.”

We can’t slow down! If an AI is going to wipe out the human race, it sure as hell ain’t gonna be a Chinese AI!
America first! 🇺🇸💵🦅
Yeah we can’t just shut it down, guys. We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas!
“And it’s not science fiction to project that within five years most economically valuable tasks will be performed by machines at a higher level of quality and lower cost than by humans.”
That is absolutely science fiction.
Yes. In the quote they left out the usual “with a 50% success rate.”
I’m so fucking tired of the subtle pro-AI propaganda making its way into articles that are supposedly warning us about it.
AI will not take your job when its able to do it better than you. AI will take your job when your fucking moronic CEO and shareholders who know absolutely nothing about AI think they’ll save more money with AI than with you.
Its that simple. AI isn’t taking over because its better. AI is taking over because those in charge are hyper-greedy, sociopathic, and some of the dumbest mother fuckers who’ve ever not forgotten how to eat.
Exactly. It’s all propaganda, but AI can still take our jobs, even if it doesn’t work. People need to stop jumping on the hype, and start resisting this bullshit.
I don’t know about ‘most’ tasks, but even current LLM/video generators generate “economic value” by throwing all kinds of slop around the internet which is then paid by the advertisers and consumers. Sure, It’s stupid beyond imagination obviously, but in the end someone gets paid and apparently pretty well as everyone and their dog are on the bandwagon.
And then there’s ‘real’ jobs in medical applications and material science where field is apparently moving pretty fast. But those aren’t on everyday headlines like the glorified text generators.
Prepare for? Hard to prepare for the horse leaving the barn when it’s already in the field.
The most annoying thing is: There are so many risks with AI use right now. Why are we talking about some fantasy where the AI turns into Skynet and destroys the world? We are already destroying the world with the tech we have today, why aren’t we talking about that.
We currently have:
We should be working on this shit, not some fantasy. But these AI companies deflect all the blame saying they have an AI safety team working on it.
