What do you mean just ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away. I am shocked

Taleya@aussie.zone on 14 Dec 2023 02:42 collapse

But but but muh economies!

dakku@sh.itjust.works on 14 Dec 2023 06:32 collapse

muh freedoms!

Taleya@aussie.zone on 14 Dec 2023 12:47 collapse

And if you ask what freedoms are being impinged by asking them to wear a protective mask the brain implodes

kescusay@lemmy.world on 13 Dec 2023 19:28 next collapse

Return? I never stopped wearing them. Or social distancing and avoiding indoor spaces packed with strangers.

Weirdly enough, I haven’t caught COVID yet, either.

Same on all points

Mask mandates never should have been lifted in the first place. We already have to wear pants, a shirt, and some kind of footwear in public; practically, this doesn’t really have a good reason other than cultural norms. Adding a mask to this is such a simple request, it blows my mind that people are so strongly against it; it’s one of the few requirements for personal attire that actually has a good reason behind it, and it’s incredibly easy to just put on a mask if you’re going to be face-to-face with another person.

What I've learned is that people don't like to be told what to do even if it is for the benefit of those around them. I've seen it mostly in the US where the mask mandate was seen as an attack on personal freedoms and not a response to a public health crisis. As usual, people thinking they are the main characters. Just put the mask on and stfu, no one cares.

NewNewAccount@lemmy.world on 13 Dec 2023 23:27 next collapse

Does it really blow your mind? I diligently wore a mask during the thick of the pandemic but I’m not exactly yearning for those days. Being able to see people’s faces is important.

dakku@sh.itjust.works on 14 Dec 2023 06:31 collapse

being able to see people’s faces is important

“Why yes, we could both kill each other in this tight space, but at least I can see your beautiful face.”

Blows my mind we still need to have this talk. Just wear the fucking mask inside and admire faces outside.

Yamayo@lemm.ee on 15 Dec 2023 06:02 collapse

I wont if it’s not necessary, and right not it isn’t. You can do it if you want.

Jumpinship@lemmy.world on 14 Dec 2023 02:25 collapse

N95 then? The surgical ones are useless. Mandated knee pads and helmets also!

Sjy@lemm.ee on 14 Dec 2023 02:47 next collapse

Yes, please make sure if you have surgery you tell your surgeon “no need to wear a mask, just a helmet and some knee pads”.

Saik0Shinigami@lemmy.saik0.com on 14 Dec 2023 03:53 collapse

You realize there’s a reason they give you antibiotics after surgeries right? It’s PRECISELY because of infection vectors like that during the surgery.

Sjy@lemm.ee on 14 Dec 2023 04:59 collapse

Yes. I’ve been in a lot of operating rooms for a lot of different surgeries. It’s also common to give antibiotics before a surgery…and wear surgical masks… which is my point, also in the context of COVID masks still work to reduce the spread of a virus. Antibiotics will not work against a virus.

Tavarin@lemmy.ca on 14 Dec 2023 05:06 collapse

Not useless, surgical masks reduce spread by more than 50% so far as I recall. Not perfect, but not useless.

I just got back from Thailand and was wondering. Didn’t seem to be a lot of sick people, though. Sorry to hear they’re dealing with it in that region again.

noodlejetski@lemm.ee on 13 Dec 2023 23:47 collapse

Didn’t seem to be a lot of sick people, though.

were you able to tell by the lack of red neon signs floating above people’s heads, saying “I’m COVID-positive”?

TacoButtPlug@sh.itjust.works on 14 Dec 2023 02:48 collapse

Hurrr derrrr… my goodness you’re clever.

_edge@discuss.tchncs.de on 13 Dec 2023 20:46 next collapse

Sane people will continue to wear the mask in crowded places.

spudwart@spudwart.com on 13 Dec 2023 21:26 collapse

Everytime I hear this I increasingly wish to get further away from people.

More than I usually do.

AdamEatsAss@lemmy.world on 14 Dec 2023 01:38 collapse

Society only works when the vast majority of people work towards a common goal. The goal is usually the betterment of everyone’s life. COVID for some reason causes huge groups of people the world over to act contradictory to the benefit of society.
