Why? Trying to keep Sicily poor?

Protesters staunchly oppose the Strait of Messina Bridge project over its scale, earthquake threats, environmental impact and the specter of mafia interference.

Mafia interference? In Italy? I thought they defeated them and corruption as well?

Sicily is kinda it’s own thing, and basically where most of the Italian Mafia is from.

Is that sarcasm? I hope its sarcasm. It’s all mafia

Lol, don’t look too closely at ‘olive’ oil exports.

Apparently the bridge thing is something the Italian right keeps calling for despite every expert worth their salt agreeing it's a terrible idea.

Hey the US isn’t so different after all.

When I saw this story last week, I had the same thought process. Like, why wouldn’t they? It’s such a short gap and could be huge for normal people.

Then I read why.

JakenVeina@midwest.social on 11 Aug 17:37 collapse

They are also angry that about 500 families would have to be expropriated in order for the bridge to be built.

This is the real kicker, at least for me. Unless these folks vote unanimously to take a GENEROUS buyout, the plan should be dead. Fuck eminent domain.

Moonrise2473@feddit.it on 11 Aug 18:50 next collapse

If the house was purchased before 2023, theoretically they get market value +15%

But still it’s a waste as we all know from the beginning that the project will never ever be completed, it’s from the 80s that’s “will start soon”

Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 11 Aug 21:16 collapse

Eminent domain is necessary for many projects. It should be restricted, but as a concept it is not inherently bad. Especially in building more trains it should be used
