Poland has banned Chinese-made cars from entering military facilities in an effort to bolster infrastructure security, according to the country’s General Staff.

The decision follows a risk analysis regarding the growing integration of digital systems in vehicles and the possibility of “uncontrolled data acquisition,” the army said in a statement published on its website on Tuesday.

NATO-member Poland has maintained trading ties with China even as Beijing sided with Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. SAIC Motor Corp.’s MG brand, Chery Automobile Co.’s models and BYD Co. led sales in Poland among Chinese auto manufacturers.

I wonder what capabilities the vehicles have that are of concern? Cameras? Microphone?

I read a suggestion that countries simply mandate that anything sold in the country which operates with software and has the ability to disrupt items of national security be made with software that is auditable and preferably ooen source software.

Cars, routers, solar power controllers, computers, etc.

How about just remove the car’s ability to not be able to send messages to anything? You know, like an air-gapped PC.

Why can’t cars just be simply made with no communication capabilities whatsoever? The obsession with car companies wanting to collect and sell data on top of selling the vehicle in the first place is obscene.

If I won the lottery, I’m torn between buying a cool classic car and having it electrified but dumb as fuck, or buying a cool modern EV and paying modders to rip out any connectivity and software I don’t control absolutely.

You’d be better off doing the former as there don’t appear to be any services that de-ratfuck your privacy in modern cars. I was recently forced into buying a '22 Chevy Bolt but discovered a DIY method of removing some of its OnStar telemetry by following this guide:
