Is Climate Change Fueling Europe’s Heat Wave? Yes, Researchers Say. (www.nytimes.com)

A scientific analysis concluded that such high temperatures, across so much of the continent, would “not have been possible” without global warming.

Human-caused climate change made this month’s roasting heat in Western Europe much more likely than it would have been even just two decades ago, scientists said Friday, highlighting the rapidly escalating risks to health and livelihoods from the burning of fossil fuels.

Good to know, let’s ignore it

saltesc@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 05:54 next collapse

Same as last year and the one before that. I assume we’ll get the same articles in 2027 as well.

comador@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 06:37 collapse

Yes, we need to talk about it ad nauseum, but not change the way we do anything until we can no longer do it.

Flower@sh.itjust.works on 26 Jun 10:01 collapse

Yeah, you already see the talking points. “but the economy” and “weather is always changing”.

But this climate thing is costing them money too now. People staying out of the streets because of heat is less spending. Cities saying they’ll have to adapt promptly demand several billions because adapting ain’t cheap.

hannesh93@feddit.org on 26 Jun 13:05 collapse

If you want to be cynical at least this weather becoming more regular will eventually help with the financial problems of the retirement- and healthcare-systems in an aging European population by lowering life-expectancy again

“No shit, Sherlock,” Snot Flickerman says.

(Not disparaging the researches but rather NYT who should be ashamed of framing this as though climate change isn’t affecting literally everything including over the top heatwaves. Fucking dogshit rag. Everyone with a fucking BRAIN in their skull, not just fucking researchers, could tell you this without needing to do research. The fact that it’s presented like this in the news is WHY we have to keep doing research to keep proving it to chucklefucks who will keep acting like it’s a question to be answered and not one that was answered in the 1970s and then hidden.)

Ventilation shutdown - not just for chickens and pigs anymore

I will repost it here, as this is again stating the obvious.

I always think about the old life magazines that i used to see at my grandfathers house. There was one i remember where there was a advertisement from humble oil (now ExxonMobile). Mind you, this was an edition from the 1960’s.

We all know who is responsible for this. And they have known for decades

It reads like they’re so proud of the fact that they’ll be fucking over everyone’s future. Vermin, truly

We’ve broken heat records two days in a row now —and will break another today, as we’ve already broken many records before this year.

To put this in perspective: the last cold record was about 4 years ago…

hannesh93@feddit.org on 26 Jun 12:59 collapse

Tbf climate change can also lead to crazy cold weather from time to time as both extremes get more extreme due to more humidity in an increasingly warmer air

Photonic@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 13:02 collapse

Well, not really according to the data, since the last time a cold record was broken was 4 years ago.

hannesh93@feddit.org on 26 Jun 13:41 collapse

Yeah but 4 years ago we already had a warmer average temperature worldwide than 40 years ago

If anything it proves my point that the last record was this recently and not decades ago.

Photonic@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 14:15 collapse

That’s simply not true. If we go beyond the fact that one data point doesn’t prove everything, we can state that there is a certain chance that a cold record will occur. In fact, each year there are 365 chances for a cold or hot record to occur, since the records are for coldest / hottest [that particular day of the year]. So each June 26th is compared to all June 26ths since we started measuring.

So that means with almost four years of no cold records, or 1377 days to be exact, there have been 1377 chances for a cold record to occur that have all been missed.

If you look at the graphs on Wikipedia you can also clearly see that cold records are occurring less often.

How does this need to be said still?

Is climate change fueling Europe’s heat wave? Yes, researchers say.

Are we going to stop appeasing 0.01% of the world’s richest people to save the rest from boiling alive? No, researchers say.

Lexam@lemmy.world on 26 Jun 11:05 next collapse

Human caused climate change is just an isolated fluke. It has only been caused by humans once in 13 billion years. And once the humans wipe themselves out the climate will rebalance itself.

What makes me laugh is there will still be boomers sweating their balls off on the verge of heatstroke going ‘nEt sTuPiD zErO!!’ and probably 'fUcK grEtA!! ’
