Allegations come days after Japanese authorities increased efforts to deter crimes by US servicemen on island
Two US marines based on the Japanese island of Okinawa are being investigated for alleged rape, days after local authorities stepped up efforts to deter sexual and other crimes by US service personnel.
A marine in his 20s is suspected of raping a Japanese woman in a bathroom at a US military base last month, while a second man, also a marine in his 20s, allegedly raped a woman at a base in January, according to media reports.
The men, who were not named publicly, had been referred to Japanese prosecutors, the Kyodo news agency said.

Again and again and again…
.I feel like this article is trying too hard to paint the US military as being a monster that its made it too confusing to follow. There are so many easier stories to use to accomplish this that I don’t understand what this article is even trying to report.
My questions after reading are:
I don’t understand what is being done for the first time since 1974, is it Japan and US jointly investigating charges against a US military member or is it the first time they’re doing a sort of audit of criminal charges?
If Japan has numbers for criminal charges against US military personnel are they the ones enforcing the charges?
Did the 2 rape investigations go uninvestigated until the change that happened days ago and why wouldnt Japan investigate their own people being raped?
If the US was brick walling Japan from investigating criminal charges of US personell then why all of a sudden allow this extended investigation by Japan?
Found waaaaaay more information from these articles:

You’d probably have more luck if u actually read the article
“Last week, US military officials and Japanese police conducted a joint patrol of a popular entertainment district near a US airbase in Okinawa. It was the first time the two countries had conducted patrols together since 1974, two years after the islands that make up Okinawa prefecture reverted to Japanese control.”
It has nothing to do with the investigation.
I actually don’t even know what you’re talking about with your other points because nowhere does it say the US is blocking the investigation in any way, and the previous investigations into previous behavior lead to indictment
So you literally linked to the Starts and Stripes, a newspaper by the DOD, and the Asia times which claims for itself to report on Asia “from a US perspective” and claim you found more information there while the first article is not even reporting on the cases mentioned in the original source.
Yeah. Sure.
