U.S. Coast Guard intercepts a second oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast (www.nbcnews.com)

This second tanker is not on a list of vessels sanctioned by the U.S., a source said.

Venezuela’s minister of the interior, Diosdado Cabello, condemned the operation in a Saturday post on Instagram.

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela denounces and rejects the theft and hijacking of a new private vessel transporting Venezuelan oil, as well as the forced disappearance of its crew, committed by military personnel of the United States of America in international waters,” Cabello said.

Saturday’s operation comes after the U.S. interdicted a large, sanctioned oil tanker known as the Skipper off the coast of Venezuela last week. The ship, previously identified by the Treasury Department as the Adisa, is an oil tanker tied to a sanctions-evading smuggling network that U.S. officials say moved Iranian oil to generate revenue for Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

It’s a blockade. Go fishing and the USA will kill you. Try to ship oil and the USA will steal it. From anyone else this would be called terrorism and piracy.

And blockades are universally considered an act of war

Unless it done by the us or it’s allies.

Opening up Belarus by removing sanction on potash, coupled with pirating venezuelan bitumen heavy crude is a direct attack on trade with Canada. Those are two key resources we export to the US. They are going to cut us off as their supplier in an effort to crush us economically.

It’s just in Americans nature to steal oil when and wherever they see it

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;

And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!

The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

Oh my god. This explains so much about US politics.

Yesterday, I was shopping and saw that various US products were on sale - I still didn’t buy any and won’t be buying any in the future.

It’s only right to boycott the US, and I’m glad that a whole bunch of people in Europe seem to feel the same way.

Same. And people I talk to at work seem to also do this. Not just the politically interested, but regular people.

This comment is meant in no way whatsoever to justify this seizure.

That tanker has been dark fleet since at least 2022, and she’s been actively and obviously spoofing since then, e.g., more or less daring the Americas to sanction her, although in a normal world it should have been OFAC doing the sanctioning, not armed marines seizing the ship and cargo.

(Not that I think the sanctions, as they are now constituted, are necessary justified either.)

mrdown@lemmy.world on 21 Dec 13:13 collapse

If it was an us ship that was sized it would be war

Saapas@piefed.zip on 21 Dec 13:30 next collapse

Venezuela is free to delcare war over this. It just isn’t a great idea for them to do that

RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world on 21 Dec 15:01 collapse

Kinda? The Finns seized a Russian dark fleet vessel with their military and if I remember correctly held her for several days.

There is a LOT of discussion about “safe passage” going on in the EU right now regarding this kind of ship. They are very dangerous because they have no P&I insurance if they have a spill (and you bet your ass they are not maintained to any remotely reasonable standard).

Again, I am not personally in favor of this stuff. Dangerous and irresponsible in multiple ways.
