If this suspect is indeed the perpetrator, this has got to be up there among the stupidest ways to get caught.
The guy’s already known to police, and in addition to being famously caught on camera, the cops likely have forensics to identify him. So then he decides to go to Algeria, which is going to be super sus any day of the week. And he decides the best way to do that is by going to CDG, where there’s not only a ton of police and cameras, but since he’s leaving Schengen, he’ll have to present a passport.
I’m sure it didn’t take the cops too much effort to put that together. And now of course they’ll rattle him until he coughs up the names of his accomplices. It won’t really matter if he doesn’t because they’ll backtrack his steps to figure out where he’s been and with whom anyway.
I’m sure the gaggle of thieves are proud to have worked with this moron.

I’m not sure what the commenter above meant either, but as a former colony, I’d guess it would be easier to extradite him as needed. Also, I’d think you’d want to get a lot more distance from France if you really were trying to flee. *shrug*

Genuinely curious what your perspective is that lets you see this as good news - it’s just bleakly depressing to me, but I’m a bit of a downer.
No, you got a point. Like these were Napoleonic jewels. That’s akin to thieves stealing from thieves. Which is to say I really couldn’t care less, but I do love me a good underdog success story.
Who cares who owned them hundreds of years ago, they’re historical pieces that everyone should be able to check out, not whoever steals it next. I don’t understand the lemmy’s view on this.
I’m sure the descendants of who they were stolen from is very concerned about the select few public that either lives near Paris, or can afford to travel there.
Did you not see the party where I said I don’t care one way or the other? I would probably care if they were legit art donated by either the artist or the commissioning patron. Excuse me for not having sympathy for the thieves with capital.
