China just filling in all the gaps and holes left by the US.

Now if only their government didn’t behave like the party in 1984

The dystopian surveillance and automated law enforcement system is the only thing that makes me hesitant to move.

Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca on 09 Jul 16:54 collapse

Exactly why I would never move to the US either.

skozzii@lemmy.ca on 09 Jul 15:20 next collapse

I would much rather go to China than the USA right now.

China wouldn’t search my phone at the border and China wouldnt arrest me for opinionated social posts I had previously made.

This backwards world we live in.

burgerchurgarr@lemmus.org on 09 Jul 15:51 collapse

I think they might also and also bug your phone. It’s just that the US has become so bad they’re converging to what dictatorships have been doing for ages already

Ferrous@lemmy.ml on 09 Jul 16:22 collapse

Every cell phone in the US is a “bug” at the behest of our corporate advertisers and data brokers.

burgerchurgarr@lemmus.org on 09 Jul 17:30 collapse

Fully agree, can still get worse than the default setting and I don’t care if the US or China installs Pegasus on your phone we shouldn’t pretend any government can be trusted

ikidd@lemmy.world on 09 Jul 16:19 next collapse

Things are bad when I consider being kidnapped by the Chinese government as less likely than the US.

Binturong@lemmy.ca on 09 Jul 16:24 next collapse

So they’re really gonna write up that whole article and NOT include the actual list, huh? Embarrassing.

JackLSauce@lemmy.world on 09 Jul 22:59 collapse

For countries not on the list, a transit policy allows eligible citizens to enter for 10 days if they depart for a different country they arrived from.

Cool cool cool… Why?

Capsicones@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 10 Jul 08:18 collapse

More flexibility on flight stopovers in China. If you are going somewhere else, China would probably like for you to spend some of your money in a Chinese city. I’m guessing 10 days is the duration because flights occasionally get canceled or delayed. A lot more people would need to apply to extend their visas on stopovers if it was only like 3 days.

Edit: spelling

JackLSauce@lemmy.world on 10 Jul 12:42 collapse

I can kinda understand that but I’ve taken week-long overseas vacations so giving border control extra work verifying a visitor isn’t returning home “too fast” seems counter-productive

JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz on 11 Jul 23:17 collapse

They give up to 10 days visa free from some countries you otherwise need a visa to enter in the first place. In guessing that if you can’t show proof you are continuing to somewhere else - like a connecting flight - you aren’t getting in at all.
