The Lebanese journalist killed in an Israeli attack on Wednesday had previously spoken of receiving a threat via an unidentified Israeli phone number that she would be killed if she did not leave southern Lebanon, where she had long been based and worked.

Amal Khalil, 43, who worked for al-Akhbar newspaper and had described herself as supporting the resistance against Israel “whether communist or Islamist”, was killed in a sustained attack by Israeli forces in which a colleague was also wounded.

Rescuers attempting to dig her out of the rubble of a building were also targeted and prevented from providing life-saving assistance.

Khalil was the ninth journalist killed in Lebanon this year. Last month three journalists were killed in a double-tap attack.

Meanwhile, an investigation by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz has found that Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon have been involved in widespread looting.

Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal. He should be arrested and sentenced to jail.

Nothing, NOTHING justifies targeting a civilian.

However, I would not use the word journalist. Al Akhbar is basically Hezbollah’s official mouthpiece.

Al Akhbar praised Iranian security forces for their bloody crack down on students. They denied the human rights abuses of Bachar El Assad, calling them “fake news”. In 2008, the Government tried to dismantle Hezbollah’s communication network. Violent clashes broke out. This paper congratulated Hezbollah for attacking police officers.

If Ukraine bombed Russia Today, I would call this a disgusting war crime. But I would not call RT journalism.

You people always victim blame, then we discover surprise more lies.

Wudi@feddit.uk on 23 Apr 19:43 collapse

What part of “this is a war crime” don’t you understand ?

I will not apologize for my comment. She was a civilian, but certainly no journalist.

When the scale of atrocities had become so extreme that teenagers were mass-raped, Al Akhbar was full of Assad apologists claiming he is a great man who respects human rights.

What don't you understand about "Everyone is Hamas Hizbollah" "Everyone is a Hamas Hizbollah mouthpiece?"

Wudi@feddit.uk on 23 Apr 19:52 collapse

Because Al Akhbar literally is.

HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works on 23 Apr 20:12 collapse

Got lots of proof to back that up?

Nothing not produced by israusa.

Anyway even if it's true, who are helping the people and who are selling out? The government aren't helping or defending, any more than Palestinians' was or Syrians' is. You know who are trying to repel genocides and legit help their people? Hamas and Hizbollah.

Well well well, what have we here?

They're not doing anything to stop the atrocities since nakba so it's pretty hollow.

This will almost certainly go onto Netanyahu’s list of charges at the ICC.

As further details of the killing emerged on Thursday, it became clear that the group Khalil was with had come under sustained attack over several hours – and that Israeli forces had apparently been aware of their identities.

Adding to the sense of horror was the fact that Khalil was trapped for hours in a house that had been bombed by Israeli forces. She died despite frantic efforts by her family, her editors and Aoun to organise a rescue.

According to her employer and the Lebanese health ministry, Khalil was working near the village of al-Tiri when a vehicle she was driving behind was hit by an Israeli airstrike, killing two people and wounding her and her colleague Zeinab Faraj, a freelance photographer.

A journalist from Al Akhbar

Journalism and Al Akhbar are two words that don’t go well together.

Doesn’t justify her death. They murdered a civilian.

But let’s not turn Al Akhbar into what it’s not. I would put it in the same category as Fox News.
