Sorry… is hectoring supposed to be heckling? Trump is the hector in this case; he can’t make Canada the hector. When the first non-proper-noun word out of a writer’s keyboard is that far off what they meant, I have difficulty taking anything else they write as anything but regurgitated vaguely understood hearsay.

gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works on 28 Apr 13:54 next collapse

It is most definitely a word, and its usage here is fine.

adespoton@lemmy.ca on 28 Apr 13:58 collapse

I never said it wasn’t a word; it means bully. But hectored doesn’t mean bullied the way we use that in English—it would mean to create a bully.

non_burglar@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 14:06 next collapse

Nope. It’s an out-of-use term, but it is definitely a synonym of bullying.

davidgro@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 16:00 collapse

The link to the “ing” version in their first link does support the use in the article. TIL also.

KoboldCoterie@pawb.social on 28 Apr 13:54 next collapse

Hectoring is to act domineering, or to try to intimidate.

cygnus@lemmy.ca on 28 Apr 14:05 collapse

Ackshually it’s only Hectoring if you drag them behind your chariot, otherwise it’s just sparkling heckling.

MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 15:22 collapse

That reminds me, Troy deserves a rewatch soon. Love those fight scenes.

cygnus@lemmy.ca on 28 Apr 15:35 collapse

Isn’t that movie notoriously terrible?

For whoever is interested in reading it, I quite liked the Peter Green translation. Fair warning though, it’s quite long, longer than the Odyssey.

MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world on 28 Apr 16:27 collapse

Oh I wasn’t saying it was a good movie. It does have a greased up Brad Pitt flying through the air stabbing dudes with a spear though. Sometimes that’s all you need from a film.

Of course, most Americans don't realize it's an intensely offensive thing. That's a major part of the problem.

“America is the greatest nation on earth, why wouldn’t another country want to be part of it?”

That’s what happens when a population is spoon-fed “patriotism” from birth. All the nationalism and propaganda is doing its job promoting American exceptionalism while diminishing empathy and critical thinking.

Ah yes another liberal who’ll fail to defend our countries borders, another Trudeau but this time with pizzaz.

If there ever is a war with the US I sure as shit want access to real firearms, none of this 3 rounds per mag headache we got now.

ZC3rr0r@lemmy.ca on 28 Apr 21:38 next collapse

And how, pray tell, is a “real” firearm going to help defend against the most technologically advanced army in the world, who can take you out from half a planet away without you ever seeing anyone until you are ginsu-bladed in half (reference: pcmag.com/…/us-used-drone-carrying-knife-missile-…)?

We don’t need more firearms in personal hands when it comes to our national defence, we need alliances, a better standing army, and probably some form of nuclear deterrence. Thinking you’ll make any meaningful difference with your personal firearm and a couple of hours on the gun range is the exact same magical thinking 2FA nuts keep using while the US government takes their rights and freedoms away.

ohshit604@sh.itjust.works on 28 Apr 23:26 next collapse

And how, pray tell, is a “real” firearm going to help defend against the most technologically advanced army in the world,

Their tech is pretty advanced I’ll give you that, but i sure as hell know if people had more access to firearms we could actually have a chance to defend ourselves from such a threat.

Our military is a joke technology & armoury wise, simple and plain, the more people who stand to defend the better.

We don’t need more firearms in personal hands when it comes to our national defence

This is where we differ, I fully believe South Korea has the right idea to train all their children in CQB and to safely handle firearms given how close North Korea is.

The same should apply to Canadians, we have a potential threat down south and a small handful of people actually know what they’re doing.

we need a better standing army, and probably some form of nuclear deterrence.

I 100% agree however, I don’t think we’ll ever see this in our lifetime with another Liberal leader.

Thinking you’ll make any meaningful difference with your personal firearm and a couple of hours on the gun range

A couple hours at the range is better than no hours at the range.

ijedi1234@sh.itjust.works on 28 Apr 23:42 collapse

You misunderstand.

Yes, one Canadian with an assault rifle can’t do much against 5 American drones.

But one Canadian with an assault rifle can do much against 5 off-duty American soldiers relaxing in a restaurant.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 01:43 collapse

Yeah… nah. I don’t want school shootings as a trade off to a hypothetical American invasion, plus, pp would fucking bend over and spread to trump. A handgun or a 30 round mag won’t make a difference.

ohshit604@sh.itjust.works on 29 Apr 02:35 collapse

don’t want school shootings as a trade off to a hypothetical American invasion

So hypothetical school shootings are better eh? Keep in mind I’m not pushing for the Canadian version of the 4th amendment, as you see in another one of my comments I encourage proper safety training beforehand.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 02:36 collapse

No? Having more, higher capacity weapons will lead to more shootings.

ohshit604@sh.itjust.works on 29 Apr 02:48 collapse

The data is already there, RCMP chiefs across the country endorse it, targeting licensed firearms owners is not the answer to solve gun crime.

Majority of our gun related crime comes from illegally smuggled firearms from the US.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 03:10 next collapse

Majority of our gun related crime comes from illegally smuggled firearms from the US

hey, quick question, what does the US have? Higher capacity magazines right? More fire arms too… now instead of them being smuggled they can be locally sourced?

Firearms are a privilege, not a right. We are not being " targeted". The answer to gun crime is to remove the root cause. But having high capacity magazines, and hand guns more available will lead to more gun violence…

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 11:40 collapse

I do want to say, there are many things about our fire arm laws that are absurd. I’m sure there is some common ground there. The fact that I can’t have a suppressor is stupid. And the OIC was poorly done and, to be frank idiotic.

ohshit604@sh.itjust.works on 29 Apr 19:33 collapse

I appreciate your candour to the situation, I respectfully disagree with your other comment and believe the privilege is being slowly taken away from us, so yes I think we’re being targeted, at this point it’s too late to argue and all I can do is hope they rethink the buyback program.

So glad I bought a 22lr Kriss Vector for them to ban it days later, now I can go and have it disabled so I don’t have to sell it.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 19:43 collapse

privilege is being slowly taken away from us

You’re not wrong.

And, I appreciate your sentiment on the matter, I don’t feel like it’s an attack, but I understood how you could.

As for the Vector, I was taking a look at the list and skimmed over it, I thought it was only the centerfire version that were affected.

Them banning the M1 carbine was really fucking stupid too.

ohshit604@sh.itjust.works on 30 Apr 02:32 collapse

I thought it was only the centerfire version that were affected.

Man so many semi-22Lr’s were reclassified to prohibited, even the GSG, aka the gun known for its power to jam every 2nd shot.

It’s seems all we got now is the SKS and the Derya.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world on 30 Apr 12:17 collapse

You’re right, sorry I forgot reading about the gsg’s being banned.

Pilferjinx@lemmy.world on 29 Apr 00:11 next collapse

If the US invades, there’s no amount of rearming that would stop them from completely destroying us. Acquiring nukes would be our best bet.

FaceDeer@fedia.io on 29 Apr 01:32 next collapse

Yeah, it'd be a three day special military operation. Just like when Russia took Ukraine.

Americans are extremely averse to casualties and pain. We could make an invasion hurt. I doubt they'd be able to endure a genuine war that genuinely enters their homeland. Not for long.

barneypiccolo@lemm.ee on 29 Apr 03:44 collapse

The US military has always proved to be very vulnerable to guerilla warfare, they’ve lost a few wars due to guerilla warfare. Canadians know their landscape and they know how to hunt and shoot, they’d put together an excellent guerilla force, and they could easily blend with American soldiers. They are also comfortable with the cold. A MAGA invasion of Canada in the Winter will be like the Nazis invading Russia. Also, all of Europe will suppport Canada.

A good portion of the US military will refuse to follow orders to invade, and resign, defect, or go AWOL, and whoever is left will be nearly universally unmotivated to invade Canada. Many military leaders will work behind the scenes to sabotage the illegal invasion. Those disenchanted military personnel will find the competent, experienced military that HitlerPig fired, ready and waiting to build a strong, motivated military force to oppose MAGA on Canada’s behalf.

In addition, 2/3+ of America will never support the invasion of Canada for ANY reason, and will align with Canada. HitlerPig will be forced to waste resources dealing with the uprising at home, distracting him from his foolish invasion.

Any HitlerPig military operation will be defined by virtuosic incompetence, which is his most reliable characteristic. He will be fighting his own military and citizen population every step of the way.

CitizenBrain@lemm.ee on 29 Apr 04:14 collapse

100% this. Which is why I kind of chuckle when I hear people worried about martial law.

Even with every cop and military officer in the country you still could not hope to restrain a properly motivated American population. They have no hope of even restraining half of the population.

People know their own turf and this country is far too big for that. Wanna do it to Canada? The country with some of the most consistently capable and highly regarded soldiers of the past 100+ years? Good luck. Lmao

sensiblepuffin@lemmy.funami.tech on 30 Apr 22:56 collapse

Couple of problems there:

  • The American population is not properly motivated. More than half of the adult population are not fit (mentally or physically) to fight anything or anyone. Now, if Canada invaded as an act of liberation, it might be a different story.
  • You might get 15% of the police and 20% of the military to do what’s right, but the problem is that the 85% and 80% of those are the ones who will retain access to weapons and ammo.
  • You’re acting like the only way to win a war is to conquer every single square foot of it, Civilization style. If Canada held NYC, DC, and maybe Chicago, for a month, they would win.
CitizenBrain@lemm.ee on 02 May 06:38 collapse

I’m not stupid or acting any specific way. Im very realistic on this subject and very aware that any meaningful rebellion would likely take years of asymmetric warfare but they would absolutely lose.

Definitely not what we want but it may be what this comes to.

if the military sucks against insurgency and they do, the cops definitely aren’t going to be any help. Start shooting at protesters and you’re gonna see shit that makes 2020 look like a children’s party.

We also have abortion rights codified in our state legislature. The running mate of Kamala Harris, Tim Walz is our governor.

Under its Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, Minnesota has expanded union protections, approved over $1 billion in housing resources, enacted universal paid family and medical leave, funded free school lunches, hiked corporate taxes and more.
