Russian energy giant Gazprom suffers $13.1 billion loss in 2024 (kyivindependent.com)

Summary

Gazprom reported a $13.1 billion loss in 2024, driven by the loss of its European market and increased tax liabilities.

The company’s revenue rose by 11%, but falling share prices and a 25% income tax rate contributed to the deficit.

Gazprom’s 2023 gas exports to the EU fell to 32 billion cubic meters, significantly lower than peak levels.

The financial crisis forced mass layoffs, including 1,600 central office employees. The EU’s shift away from Russian energy and Ukraine’s refusal to extend a gas transit agreement exacerbated the situation.

What about all the Ukrainian drone strikes on their refineries and processing plants? Surely they have a major effect on that, too? I wonder how much these account for.

Fuck Russia. Burn that shithole to the ground.

Valmond@lemmy.world on 21 Mar 09:33 collapse

Yeah but the Russians wouldn’t acknowledge that, “it’s the fault of the west!!” as usual.

I bet the losses are worse too lol.

DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee on 21 Mar 09:38 next collapse

That’s true. They keep claiming they intercepted these drones. Lmao. Sure buddy. Great interceptions all around.

What a shit show.

cows_are_underrated@feddit.org on 21 Mar 15:07 collapse

The real strength of drones is, that you can send them in swarms. If you send, as example, 100 drones on the way to a refinery it does not really matter if you shoot down 50,because 50 drones still do a shit ton of damage.

DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee on 21 Mar 15:11 collapse

Yes. Thanks for the reminder. Drones are fucking scary as hell.

They are cheap to produce. Can be built in the thousands (probably millions if shit goes down) in short time. And then good luck to ANY air Defense.

It‘s scary. And it will happen that a country will just instantly be bombed to shit by drones because they don’t have enough AA missiles or whatever.

We somehow moved from human soldiers to automated weapons. But somehow also, civilians are still the target.

Fuck humans. We fucking suck.

cows_are_underrated@feddit.org on 21 Mar 16:16 collapse

Absolutely. Drones are a fucking nightmare. They are cheap as hell, they can be made in big quantities and developing them is quite easy, since you can 3d print a lot of the parts.

DicksAndPizza@lemm.ee on 21 Mar 17:56 collapse

So right. They’re really scary. On the other hand (off topic) god I wish I had a 3D printer. These things sound AWESOME.

PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world on 21 Mar 14:58 collapse

I hope they are. After all the sanctions, the war, infrastructure destroyed, it still doesn’t really seem like they are feeling it.

What’s that in %? Like, Micro$quash makes 65 Billion a year, they could absorb (and do) that kind of loss without missing a beat. I would expect the state oil company of “a gast station masquerading as a country” to be at least that big.

Buelldozer@lemmy.today on 21 Mar 13:27 next collapse

In your example MS makes 65 Billion so if a few business units lost 13 Billion it’s NBD, the overall company is still profitable. In this case though Gazprom lost 13 Billion across all units. What’s worse is that there’s no way for them to get more. They can’t sell stock and as a Government Russia is basically broke.

Go here and select "net income"

2021 = +27b

2022 = +16.8b

2023 = -7b

2024 = -13b

This hurts them, a lot. Per the article, the EU is buying 1/6th the gas they used to.
