China’s leader Xi Jinping declared people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese and want peace.

Isn’t that pretty much what Putin said about Ukraine before invading?

TheLunatickle@lemmy.zip on 10 Apr 07:58 next collapse

It’s a common scheme, Authoritarian claims people in neighbouring country are ethnically/culturally the same as them, accuses the target country of suppressing “their” people, invades to “Protect” “their” people. Rinse and repeat.

Tolc@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 14:35 collapse

Its hilarous how liberal just throw the term authoritarian whenever they like

how many country the non authoritarians have invaded?

Cypher@aussie.zone on 10 Apr 17:33 collapse

Invading countries is not the metric by which an individual or government are determined to be authoritarian.

It helps if you have even the vaguest clue as to the meaning of a word before you object to its use.

Tolc@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 19:30 collapse

It would also be helpful if libs stop using the term authoritarian if the govt doesnt hold show elections every 4 years

prex@aussie.zone on 10 Apr 08:34 next collapse

A common misunderstanding: Putin wants a piece of Ukraine. Quite a big piece, well all of it really.

SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de on 10 Apr 09:23 next collapse

I also don’t think it’s anything new?

I’m not sure deep into the details of taiwan and china, but iirc they both more or less agree that they are “the china”, and just disagree on the exact details

Gates9@sh.itjust.works on 10 Apr 09:27 next collapse

Idk but I believe the pretext was ethnically “Russian” people living in Ukrainian territories. It is true that the two countries share a great deal of ethnic heritage. The Rus people were from Kyiv.

Buffalox@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 09:42 collapse

No it was nothing of the kind. He claimed Ukrainians were basically Russian, that is not about Russian minorities.

Gates9@sh.itjust.works on 10 Apr 14:53 collapse

I think we’re splitting hairs. We agree that Putin is just using the subject of ethnicity as a tool for conquest.

Buffalox@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 17:33 collapse

Yes, Putin will use any misinformation and manipulation he can, including making a terrorist attack and blame it on others to promote his agenda. That is how he came to power!

Gates9@sh.itjust.works on 10 Apr 17:40 collapse

Chechnya?

Buffalox@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 17:52 collapse

Also Hitler called Austrians German before annexing them.

Tolc@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 14:36 collapse

why are you mad?

Gates9@sh.itjust.works on 10 Apr 09:24 next collapse

Is this controversial? Don’t people in Taiwan consider themselves Chinese? Republic of China?

poVoq@slrpnk.net on 10 Apr 10:57 collapse

No, that is only the official line due to history and political pressure from China.

See: en.wikipedia.org/…/Opinion_polling_on_Taiwanese_i…

Liberals seething

traxex@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 10 Apr 15:12 collapse

I imagine the people of Taiwan are also pretty pissed. But that doesn’t matter to you, does it?

Tolc@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 15:24 next collapse

I dont think so, what Xi said is objective fact and people of both sides consider themselves chinese

traxex@lemmy.dbzer0.com on 10 Apr 15:28 next collapse

Not sure that’s a fact and it’s crazy that you would say that without any sort of source.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Taiwan_independence_movement has a different outlook. Putting 50% at independence and a sub 15% wanting reunification. So what do you say to actual facts?

Tolc@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 15:41 collapse

its called republic of CHINA

Jumi@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 16:26 next collapse

The “government” of Taiwan is the equivalent of if MAGA invaded Hawaii and claimed that the rest of the continental US was now called Hawaii and ruled by them. The Taiwanese govt is a historically far-right US puppet govt that is one of the biggest supporters of Israel and its genocide. And according to polling in Taiwan, less than 30% of Taiwanese people want independence from China.

They no longer bid for ownership over the mainland. I think that ended in the 90s, so that is just irrelevant. Secondly, your one poll still has the majority maintaining status quo, which in conjunction with the poll I already posted, means the majority of people just want to keep going with what they got, which is currently NOT unified with China. They also consider themselves Taiwanese in a majority.

voaw@lemmy.world on 10 Apr 18:26 collapse

Again <30% want independence from China
