Weeks after a wave of retaliatory violence is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people – including some 800 civilians – Alawites in the religious minority’s Syrian coastal heartland are still reeling from the scale and brutality of the killings, and wondering what the events mean for hopes of a peaceful new country.

Thankfully, like 7K Alawites have taken refuge in a Russian airbase. Russian forces are expanding their control outside the base to create a buffer zone to protect the people there and Commander of the Russian Forces in Syria, General Yuryevich stated weeks ago that:

“If HTS convoys approach Khmeimim, we will turn them into ashes. We are monitoring the situation closely.”
