“the prisoners of war come from all corners of the world: Kenya, Nepal, Tajikistan. They say they were deceived by Russia into joining a war they did not want to fight”

Russia running into all the same problems of a prolonged ground war that plague any imperial power.
Strangely, I see so many of these posts indicating this as some kind of weakness Ukraine should be expected to exploit. However, you can see all the same problems of conscription on the opposite side of the front lines. Ukraine has increasingly turned to South America for expendables, with 40% of new recruits coming from across the Atlantic this year. Incidentally, a lot of these recruits are coming from the drug cartels.
…huh. It almost seems like war is bad.
Unpopular American Opinion
Russia also has 4x the population of Ukraine, so the manpower issue is still notable on a relative scale.
Don’t tell .ml they think it’s going swimmingly over there.
lemmy.ml where the ml actually means ‘Moscow Lovers’ instead of ‘Mali’.
How do you trick someone into fighting in a foreign war? Bribery and blackmail but deception?
From what ive heard (!) they are often offered “non-combat roles”, so they are being told that they would help in the war effort by doing white collar stuff or logistics far inland, away from the fighting. Once in russia, their passports are taken away and they are being told “tough luck, if you ever wanna leave and see some money, grab a rifle and storm that MG-nest”.
This aligns with what I read in an article several months ago as well.
I mean.
This was the case.
In the hit feature film enemy at the gates.
I don’t know how factual that movie was or if it’s happening now though.
IS that Tx dude who moved his family to Russia still alive?
Pretty sure there was more than one, and at least one was killed pretty quickly
Yeah he died. And his family is now stuck in Russia.
Sadly I see he is still alive. nbcnews.com/…/american-family-moved-russia-seekin…
