Ukraine, England, Poland, Latvia, and Sweden oppose the readmission of Russian teams to European football.

saltesc@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 08:03 collapse

Hopefully enough to pressure other EU countries to follow suit. It’s unfortunate for players—and any Russian—that opposes the regime, but this is about the regime, not individual Russians. They shouldn’t be surprised.

Deestan@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 06:04 next collapse

Norway too: fotball.no/…/nff-vil-ikke-spille-mot-aldersbestem…

Quick translate: Norwegian Football Federation have made it clear on behalf of all clubs that they refuse to play Russian teams.

UEFA: “think of the children deprived of their football”, NFF: “state sponsored teams competing as Russia are too tied to the regime and fuck UEFA for not even asking anyone before deciding to let Russia back in”

Tatters@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 06:09 next collapse

UEFA are testing the waters by allowing Russia to compete only in the under 17 competition initially. Depending on the reaction, they may lift the ban in the senior competitions too. More countries need to boycott the U17 competition to send UEFA a clear message—if enough teams join the boycott then the competition will not be viable, leading to loss of revenue, and money talks.

Why, they’re children, they have nothing to do with this war and can’t do anything about it. Its not even like they’ll bring enough money back to significantly effect the war economy.

Fuck Putin and his imperialism but this whole collective punishment for a population living under an authoritarian regime seems unfair and petty . Yeah a majority of them support the war but banning their kids from football isn’t gonna help that, and even if it did they aren’t going to overthrow the government for it.

You may think of them as children, but they are almost old enough (18) to be conscripted to fight in Ukraine.

I feel like neither China nor Russia should compete in UFC either. Just feels wrong to see. And with Russians there will always be doping.

Yes, but Tomato Head is a big maga and they love Russia for some reason.

bery@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 06:40 next collapse

What’s the purpose of forbidding Russia from playing sports? I mean sure sanctions and all but what’s sport gonna do? I would understand if the sports teams did or said something that would warrant the ban but I don’t think most of the players are pro Putin? I guess I’m just uninformed on the opinions of Russian sport players lol (and in general I guess)

ANIMATEK@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 06:45 next collapse

I think it has more to do with sending a message to their people. The team represent their nation, and their nation has started a war of aggression, so the nation and therefore the team shouldn’t be welcome. It is sad for the players though.

bery@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 07:51 collapse

Yeah. I get it now.

zenitsu@sh.itjust.works on 29 Sep 2023 09:31 collapse

It’s also not fair that Russian players get to practice and train in peace, while Ukrainian players have to deal with all of the consequences of the invasion.

bery@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 10:18 collapse

Oh yeah, I didn’t even think of that

Chee_Koala@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 07:23 collapse

The purpose is that you don’t have to remain professional in face of tyranny and oppression. I would also lay down my sneakers if a Rusnia was on the other team, because I don’t want to be forced to ‘be civil’ when their kind is around. I would also guess that officially, none of the moscovite players denounce the war, so you could technically say they are not against it, which would repulse me to my core.

Thirdly, any opportunity to let Soviet 2.0 Beta show themselves in a positive light is not welcome in Europe. It grows their cause, and they suck butt so it shouldn’t grow it should peter out.

bery@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 07:50 collapse

Ah, I get it now lol

How do the crossposts of this post work out? Two are to legit communities with actual people; /c/world@lemmy.world and /c/europe@feddit.de

Three are reddit-promoting bot-communities: /c/ukraine@zerobytes.monster, /c/ukraine@lemmit.online and /c/worldnews@bot@lemmit.online

I thought these bot-communities, which are a blight on Lemmy, exclusively post links to reddit. So how is it technically possible two of those bots end up linked together in one cross-post?

Also please shut them down if you can. They flood the network with zero-engagement posts, creating a terrible experience especially for newcomers on the All feed.

Ruzzia should be banned from competing in anything until the war ends, all territories are restored to Ukraine, and Ukraine is fully repaired from the barbarism commited to it.

XbSuper@lemmy.world on 29 Sep 2023 14:34 collapse

I’m good with, the war ending, all Ukrainian land given back, and a plan to help rebuild everything they destroyed. The reason I don’t think they need to wait for full rebuilding, is it’s a carrot they can be given in exchange for doing the right thing, and as long as they continue with the plan, the carrot remains.

TheBlue22@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 29 Sep 2023 19:20 collapse

True! I didn’t think of that. That would work even better.

Thanks. Seems like it needs a bit more context though, the clip doesn’t really explain anything in detail. I hate this kind of editing.

But I hope no one doubts that Denmark is also an extremely racist country because it really is and proves itself to be time after time (even regardless of this.)

BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works on 30 Sep 2023 22:39 collapse

IDK the audio only says something about someone being united with his family in Qatar, and that audio is dubbed onto a clip of a news anchor with a print out of some monkeys hugging, interlaced with pictures of Moroccan football players hugging women.

Something’s a bit “off” with this story. One thing is that the anchor is holding the picture clued to cardboard (or it’s printed directly, doesn’t really matter) which is a step above just printing it on the office printer. That means it would be deliberate, which is something I don’t buy. But what really really sets off my rat detector is that I consume a lot of news, but I haven’t heard anything about this before. Danish news outlets are super bored during the summer, and this story would have been good for a couple of days, depending on how it’s handled.

I stand corrected. The incident seems to have happened around December 2022, which could explain why it wasn’t that big of a story in Denmark. Apparently the news station had to hire guards after the incident. Maybe the story was bigger internationally? IDK but I definitely stand corrected!
