Paris Games gender row was product of Russian fake news campaign, IOC's Bach says (www.reuters.com)

A gender row involving two female boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympics was the result of a Russian fake news campaign and had little to do with reality, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said on Saturday.

Bach, who is stepping down in June after 12 years in charge of the biggest job in world sports, said the IOC had needed to fight off many similar campaigns before and after the Paris Games.

The boxing competition at the Paris Games was run by the IOC after it stripped the International Boxing Association (IBA) of recognition last year over its failure to implement reforms on governance and finance.

But the IBA, run by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev with close links to the Kremlin, accused the IOC during Paris of allowing two female athletes, who had been banned by the IBA following a chromosome test a year earlier, to compete.

A whole rasher of shit these days, ships anchor dragging comm. cables, all sorts of things. While everyone besides putty scratches their head and wonders why things got so cray cray all of a not so sudden.

Lots of people had pointed out the issues with the IBA and who they were run by while this was happening.

The fact that it takes organizations like the IOC this fucking long to research and prove it is a fucking joke.

Institutions simply do not move as fast as misinformation.

A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth can get its boots on.

It doesn’t help that the information is readily available and easily provable yet dinosaur institutions think they need to spend nine fucking months “investigating” it before they can make a fucking statement.

Yeah, no shit.

Let’s go back and look at who ran with this narrative so we can see who’s a gullible idiot. No one will be surprised.

I got confused about which side not to believe when one of the most corrupt governments on the planet starts mucking with one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet.

one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet

What did FIFA have to do with it?

HamsterRage@lemmy.ca on 15 Mar 2025 22:50 collapse

It’s a close call, but I think the IOC just edges out FIFA in overall corruptness.

AbidanYre@lemmy.world on 16 Mar 2025 13:20 collapse

In a race to be the most corrupt, they’re both winning.

Who said you have to believe one side or the other? Who would believe a single word from a politician? You’d have to be really naive to assume they’d ever be honest. There’s no sarcasm or hubris in that. They’ll lie faster than they can think.

I’d trust Bach as much as I’d trust Putin. So I just don’t fucking care. Never cared about the Olympics, anyway so this shit show isn’t going to spoil my day.

Everyone with minimal interest could get this information pretty fast. I think within a week or two you got free articles explaining everything about the corruption from the IBA. However, lots of fearful, angry people did not care.
