This is gross and embarrassing. Keeping gentoo penguins underground for 14 years with “no sunlight or fresh air” is the kind of corporate cowardice that puts profit over basic welfare. Even if the enclosure is climate controlled, that does not excuse cramped, unnatural conditions in the middle of a big city. If it smells like greed and looks like neglect, it probably is.
That said, I’m not naive, rewilding captive birds is not a simple option. But there are plenty of better, accredited facilities and sanctuaries where these penguins could live with natural light, space, and proper enrichment. Merlin needs to stop hiding behind PR lines, be transparent about health and behavior reports, and relocate them where experts say they will actually thrive.
Sign the petition, pile on political pressure, and demand independent inspections with real consequences. Welfare over ticket sales, always.
Would it cost that much to replace these real penguins with robot penguins? Or even 3D projected penguins? Maybe even a rotating weekly gallery of different artifical penguin…things
Animatronic penguins? An absurd amount. But any video replacement would involve rehoming the penguins, which is expensive. Even more so if they’re not habituated.
If you think this is bad, just wait till you see how the animals you eat are kept. Or is it different when it’s billions of chickens instead of 15 penguins?

Probably a mistake to name them The Epstein Files

A lot.

Only EngLAnD would keep themselves in this looney ass wacky predicament. I bet those single slice loving penguins are behind this.
I’d be willing to sacrifice a million of you humans if it means one of those penguins made it out safely.
What do you mean you humans?
“not me of course”
That ad though: “Finnish and Norwegians can apply for American citizenship!” i have no words

Are we sure they want sunlight and fresh air?
