Those planes still operate behind the front line. Maybe NATO is more concerned about planes not being able to protect themselves, than them straying into enemy territory and getting shot down.

No, it’s more about the radar and the missile avoidance systems. Though for the AIM air-to-air rockets, they explode so high up in the air that finding wreckage of them may be difficult.

Good equipment is always nice, but as long as they have only about 6 F16s it won’t really matter much.
