Brasil would have arrested him? Aren’t they in BRICS?

deus@lemmy.world on 18 Oct 20:37 next collapse

That doesn’t mean much. Iran and Saudi Arabia also are in it and they hate each other.

abysmalpoptart@lemmy.world on 18 Oct 21:04 collapse

I thought it was India and South Africa, not Iran and Saudi Arabia

deus@lemmy.world on 18 Oct 21:11 next collapse

It was, indeed. The group has grown a lot since then but the original name has stuck.

abysmalpoptart@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 13:39 collapse

Ah, wasn’t aware, thanks!

Dainterhawk999@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 10:08 collapse

A lot more countries are being invitied to be a member of the intra fighting group known as BRICS.

Putin bruh is forcing other countries by implementing sanctions in ways such as by not accepting bananas and apples… 🍌🍌🍌🍎🍎🍎

abysmalpoptart@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 13:40 collapse

That’s interesting, guess i wasn’t tracking that closely enough. Thank you!

cygnus@lemmy.ca on 18 Oct 20:39 next collapse

As I feel the need to say every time it’s mentioned, BRICS is made-up nonsense fabricated by Goldman Sachs to sell third-rate equities. Think about the relationship between the countries of “BRICS” and ask yourself if that sounds like an actual alliance.

HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club on 18 Oct 21:27 next collapse

It has become a diplomatic talking shop similar to the G7. There has been pushes from some member states to make it more, including creating alternate financial systems, but it has been slow growing.

NOT_RICK@lemmy.world on 18 Oct 23:35 next collapse

Russia got all pissy with Kazakhstan just this week as a result of them not joining the BRICS

bobs_monkey@lemm.ee on 19 Oct 00:19 next collapse

Nothing like fomenting trust in a global financial transaction system by threatening potential user nations.

BRICKS

Dainterhawk999@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 10:05 next collapse

Turtalous growth because of the so many differences in political, economical, ideological between the participating countries which results in shitload of epic proportions

RestrictedAccount@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 11:24 collapse

People care about the G7 because they have power and they sometimes agree on important things.

Neither of those are true of the “BRICS”.

HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club on 19 Oct 11:34 collapse

China, India, and Brazil are all large countries with large economies, but I agree they don’t have a lot to agree on.

gwilikers@lemmy.ml on 19 Oct 04:25 next collapse

This is intreresting. What is the connection between GS and BRICs? How does it help them sell equities?

eskimofry@lemm.ee on 19 Oct 11:02 next collapse

GS diversifying and playing both sides? Just a hunch. G7 has the west… whereas one could argue that the BRICS might evolve into an eastern bloc.

Doesn’t seem that way when Lula proposes Putin’s peace plan that only BRICS countries think is fair.

mamotromico@lemmy.ml on 19 Oct 14:42 collapse

Sorry to say but “BRICS” is far from “made up nonsense” here in Brazil. There’s plenty of export and some industries that got a boost thanks to it, it’s a very real economic block. I don’t know why you would think that it is not real, especially now that we are setting up a payment system to avoid the dollar usage.

Oh really? Let’s take China, the biggest economy in “BRICS”. Here is the history of Brazil’s trade to China. It has of course grown (probably mostly soybeans). You might think that growth is thanks to BRICS.

But wait, what’s this? Canada’s trade with China has grown even more? Is it now BRICCS?

<img alt="" src="https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/fd03c5fd-ca63-47fc-be92-363b9e72d61d.png">

This is nowhere near implementation. Putin proposing something doesn’t immediately make it real. It also assumes great stupidity on the part of China and India to tether themselves economically to the sinking ship that is Russia. India in particular is exploiting Russian economic weakness at every opportunity.

Hey Putin, COME TO BRAZIL!

LeFantome@programming.dev on 19 Oct 17:50 collapse

You just need his plane to make an “emergency landing” while on the way to somewhere else.

You would probably just nab a body double though. I doubt he leaves the country anymore ( except maybe for China ).

jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 08:24 next collapse

Maybe Biden can invite him to come talk in the states like he did with his good friend Netanyahu.

Kbobabob@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 10:26 collapse

I’m curious how this makes sense to you.

Maalus@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 10:30 collapse

Both have ICC warrants out for them for crimes against humanity. Only one spoke to congress, why not invite the other?

Kbobabob@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 10:49 next collapse

I didn’t think Bibi actually had a warrant. I know they filled for one but I never saw it was issued. I can’t find anything saying that it was issued or when.

Here’s one form a month ago asking whether they would issue a warrant or not.

AAA@feddit.org on 19 Oct 11:22 collapse

You are correct. The ICC warrant for Netanyahu needs yet to be approved by an ICC judge. For now it’s only a warrant request.

donuts@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 14:06 collapse

US has a history of not caring what the ICC thinks though. Remember the Hague Invasion Act?

barsquid@lemmy.world on 19 Oct 14:17 collapse

I assume that is their point.

theacharnian@lemmy.ca on 19 Oct 11:17 next collapse

Awesome. Looking forward to the day when Netanyahu and Gallant also get the treatment. Come on ICC, put out the warrants!

LeFantome@programming.dev on 19 Oct 17:49 collapse

They are unlikely to. Putin was charged with abducting children, not just killing people. And his invasion was unprovoked. And……politics.

America is not a signatory to the ICC ( wonder why ). They are not the reason that Putin was charged or why Brazil would arrest him.

Kudos to Brazil to having balls, unlike Mongolia, and this despite being part of BRICS (unlike Mongolia which isn't).
