Do you know that Canada has a 250 per cent tariff? Two hundred and fifty, nobody knows that. They charge us numbers that are crazy.

Cheeto continues to be totally ignorant of how tariff work.

Bonifratz@lemm.ee on 26 Mar 2025 11:37 collapse

I honestly, literally believe that Trump still doesn’t know what a tariff is.

PointyReality@lemmy.world on 26 Mar 2025 12:17 collapse

Pretty sure you can say that about most republicans.

The national post is a U.S. owned newspaper that runs in Canada.

Those articles are all geared towards making the U.S. look good. Don’t believe a word of what’s in it. They have an agenda to work towards breaking Canada.

Dagwood222@lemm.ee on 26 Mar 2025 11:44 next collapse

No you don’t.

If the government of the USA falls apart there is still a giant military infrastructure in place.

If you think that they’ll just shut down all those aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines you are terribly mistaken.

NABDad@lemmy.world on 26 Mar 2025 13:29 collapse

People seem to keep missing that. The only country that has ever used nuclear weapons in war is falling apart. You aren’t safe if you’re in another country. You aren’t safe if you’re on this planet.

Dagwood222@lemm.ee on 26 Mar 2025 13:39 collapse

Exactly. Politics is messy and there aren’t ever going to be perfect options.

Figuring out the least terrible choice is how we progress.

Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca on 26 Mar 2025 11:59 next collapse

The voters for sure. I’ve engaged with so many obnoxious, irrational, hyper-aggressive people lately who are so high on their own farts and delusion that they’re beyond getting through to. One guy even offered to “fly me out today” to fight him over the subject. Right-wing propoganda has them angry at their own shadow.

I know advocating for violence is frowned upon, but maybe fucking these people up is the only way to get through to them. Seems to be the only language they speak by the end of any argument.

DeskReference@lemmy.ca on 26 Mar 2025 12:54 next collapse

Lmao. Should have asked him to send you the money to book. I’m sure he can afford it with all of the money he’s saving because of tariffs and DOGE cuts.

stoly@lemmy.world on 26 Mar 2025 22:48 collapse

Keep repeating to yourself: they have an “external locus of identity”. This is why they are angry, because an attack on Trump is an attack at their personal identities.

Ledericas@lemm.ee on 27 Mar 2025 07:25 next collapse

the voters, trump knows republicans are so easy to manipulate thats why he switched parties to republicans.

WiseScorpio@lemmy.world on 27 Mar 2025 01:44 next collapse

If something is really cool, Trump hates it.

If something is garbage, Trump thinks it’s wonderful.

If something mocks Trump, Trump’s brittle ego can’t handle it. He has no emotional capacity to handle criticism. He is stuck with the emotional maturity of a generic 5-year old; maybe 7-year old.

turnip@sh.itjust.works on 27 Mar 2025 01:57 next collapse

If Im not mistaken Trump says specifically, “if a country has tariffs on us we put tariffs on them, if they remove tariffs on us we remove tariffs on them”.

If project 2025 is to be believed his goal is to get Canada to remove their tariffs, including protectionist policies for things like banks, dairy, and telecoms.

Through that guise is he a free trade purist, and our existing free trade system is an oxymoron?

houseofleft@slrpnk.net on 27 Mar 2025 06:55 collapse

I think this is how Trump phrases it. In reality almost all countries have tariffs of some kind to protect key industries. Trump’s demands/bullying/tarrif-mania normally amounts to him wanting specific tarrifs removed to benefit the US.

turnip@sh.itjust.works on 27 Mar 2025 16:37 collapse

Key industries like dairy, so Canadian citizens get the privilege of paying 24$ for a tiny block of quality cheese.

I doubt the poors health would suffer from eating cheese instead of highly processed junkfood, we may even be able to lower the obesity rate and our healthcare costs.

houseofleft@slrpnk.net on 27 Mar 2025 19:39 collapse

I’m not very knowledgable on Canadian politics, but agriculture is a sizable part of their GDP[1], seems like a fair enough view to value the jobs and industry it provides over having lower priced dairy?

More importantly, it seems like a choice that’s down to the voters of Canada, and if the USA doesn’t like it, they should negotiate to find something that worksfor both countries, rather than trying to use their economic heft into bullying the world.

Or the US can tariff us instead, destroying our economy to get us to stop with the hubris that we are a self made country and not fully reliant on the US for our standard of living.
