Being a clever bastard with a gangster mindset, of course Putin would have been paranoid one way or the other, so that won’t change much I think. But things like that happening - no matter if it will end up being explainable as a proper accident or a failed assassination attempt or whatever - tend to undermine the mythos of being invulnerable and always 3 steps ahead of the game, that people like Putin want to disseminate about themselves. That’s my current hope in the political climate.

ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world on 30 Mar 09:28 next collapse

I don’t know if I buy that the people are rising up, but maybe some oligarch got tired of Putin for some reason? Or maybe the KGB doesn’t like how slow the conquering of Ukraine is going.

Flyswat@lemmy.ml on 30 Mar 09:35 collapse

I expect news in the coming days of people falling out of windows…

perestroika@lemm.ee on 30 Mar 09:29 next collapse

The headline is mistaken. I checked out an article with photos from the scene.

The limousine was authentic. The place was nice, a few blocks from the FSB headquarters.

But there was no “tremendous explosion” - the car just burnt. Every house had its windows intact, the car itself had its windows intact while burning, etc.

Explanations: technical malfunction, passer-by with fire cubes and a lighter.

silicon@lemmy.world on 30 Mar 16:09 collapse

What’s a fire cube? I’m guessing you’re not referring to the Amazon Fire cube…

Dultas@lemmy.world on 30 Mar 16:20 next collapse

First of all, this does not look like an assassination attempt. The engine caught fire. A Russian-made limousine. Might be (politically motivated) vandalism, might be “a Tesla”.

There’s no freedom of speech or poltical expression in Russia anymore. The state controls the media and the media control the narrative. This is the totalitarian approach. The disadvantage for Putin/Kreml is that they really don’t know anymore how deep the resentment against them goes. And neither do we.

Of course the explanation will be that Ukrainian sympathisers did it, but I think it’s easy to see that a Russian does not even have to be a Ukrainian sympathiser to want Putin dead.

But I’m sure the vile filth of the south will follow me again.

So I’ve decided to parabellum.

Depends entirely on the far right political parties. They’ve surged up towards 20% lately.

Idk really the appeal, but no clue if it’s a temporary situation.

Europe is dealing with an aging population, so 2nd generation immigrants are a blessing.

Like to be honest, even if the parents aren’t that easily integrated into the work force, the real pearls are the children they bring with them.

It takes time, effort and resources to raise kids and plenty of 2 income couples have stopped having kids. We need people for the future.

chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world on 30 Mar 16:28 next collapse

Blowing up Putin would be nice but it’s not a guarantee the war would end. It would lead to a power struggle in the Kremlin, no doubt, but there are loads of hawks in that regime and many are much more extreme than even Putin.

Of course, a more extreme war hawk might end up benefitting Ukraine by hastening the collapse of Russia. Or it might lead to nuclear war. It’s really hard to predict exactly what will happen.

njm1314@lemmy.world on 31 Mar 01:46 collapse

No that’s the actual definition of the word liberal. We got 300 plus years of liberal history to point to. It’s always the same song and dance. Nothing matters more than private property and Law and Order to a liberal. Everything else will be thrown away in favor of those two things. Every. Single. Time.

Hell it’s the original sin of our nation. The great liberal thinkers of the American Revolution. Jefferson and Madison and all the rest. What happened when it came time to fulfill their ideals? What happened when it came time to treat all men equal? Oh we can’t have that if we free the slaves we would be upsetting the order of things and depriving men of their private property. Once you understand that complete and utter Ironclad rule of liberal ideology you’ll understand how the last 300 plus years of human history have played out.

I’m amazed no one has pointed out the possibility that this was staged by Putin himself as a prerequisite to enforce greater surveillance, military and police presence, claim opposition and Ukraine to be terrorists, and so on. This is, besides a malfunction, much more likely than a failed assassination attempt that went this badly, doesn’t have a suspect, and got reported on.

Etterra@discuss.online on 30 Mar 20:44 next collapse

We can rule out a Ukrainian assassination attempt. They have a pretty good track record of success.

When has it ever happened in history for a dictator to stage an assassnation or coup attempt on himself? They always sell the image that they are forever beloved and wanted to be in power by everyone.

why would he tell people that the people around him and closest to him dislike him and want him dead? This is the complete opposite of what every dictator fears to unveal. His gaurds are already under heavy paranioa. Now he openly tells everyone it’s your chance to take me out because no one likes me?

If he wanted to blame ukraine ,it’d have been a lot cheaper and more believable if he just let a drone hit his palace.

A malfunction of a $300,000 car engine overheating in cold weather is more believable , but realistically no. He’s is too old and has dragged his country’s economy and people lives to ruins. He is nothing but an ego at this point and does not take many decisions. This is why I’m %100 positive that not much will change in Russia after his death.

Like fuck Trump, but if they staged it why would the shooter be a disaffected conservative and not some antifa supersoldier or whatever? Like they’re playing out their fantasies and apparently they can construct whatever reality they feel like, why muddy the waters in any way?

I’m sorry, the reality in which the dude just sucked, the secret service kind of suck at their job, and the bullet grazed Trump’s ear rather than going into his brain from sheer dumb luck is a messy, shitty, scary place where nobody really calls the shots, but it turns out that’s probably the one we live in.

It bled, there are photos of it bleeding. We have all seen it.

A wound like that doesn’t need to leave a big scar. Sure, some doctor might have been lying about the “2cm wide wound” but that’s not surprising at all. We know they’re liars and there will be misinformation around the event, but that doesn’t mean the wound didn’t exist. Head wounds bleed a lot even if they’re very small.

You don’t have anything except a tendency to confirm your pre-existing beliefs.

Excrubulent@slrpnk.net on 03 Apr 00:14 collapse

Also, I just want to add: they picked an easily manipulated, disposable kid, and told him to shoot near but not hit Trump? Is that the story you’re going with?

Or what, there was no bullet, the injured people in the crowd were actors, they killed that guy later, the photo of the bullet was manipulated, and they just made sure they got to the shooter first to replace the blanks with real rounds?

Your theory either relies on the hypercompetence of a disposable kid to not actually kill Trump, or you’re enlisting a lot of extra people who all have to be kept quiet now, forever, all for the sake of a single moment of manufactured drama.

Which one is it? Or is there a secret third option?

is Putin dead yet? dude’s old. somebody oughta smack him with a skateboard,

edit; comments suggesting some sort of violence against Putin tend to elicit a positive reaction.

curious!? fuckin “change my mind” meme guy has notes, but he might busy abusing his partner

Rakonat@lemmy.world on 31 Mar 07:06 collapse

Much like Sadam before him, he has a number of body doubles so even if it did appear he was assassinated in public, probably get some story about a miraculous rescue and recovery if acknowledged ‘Putin’ was in the area at all.

it’s so tedious. Putin, Orban, Trump, Bolsonaro, just an endless stream of vacuous cartoon characters

TBi@lemmy.world on 31 Mar 09:25 next collapse

For me the tedious part is not the vacuous character but the people who vote for them.

easy problem to fix, just dismantle all the education

Rakonat@lemmy.world on 31 Mar 11:03 collapse

Dismantling education is exactly how we got here.

man i love voucher-fed education so much. i rented a house that was owned by an obscure religious group with ties to some old-school women’s suffragist AND super gross racism. they had their little private elementary school right next door and me? wouldn’t a hurt a fly, well, might hurt a fly - all these fucks obsessed with biblical morality checked me out via google, and there’s not much to learn that way
