Summary

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, encouraged by Donald Trump’s return to power, hosted Germany’s far-right AfD leader Alice Weidel, calling the party the “future” of Germany.

He aims to unite Europe’s far-right in the EU Parliament and praised AfD’s anti-immigration stance. Weidel, in turn, lauded Hungary as a “role model.”

AfD, polling at 21% ahead of Germany’s February 23 election, has gained mainstream recognition, with CDU leader Friedrich Merz breaking precedent by seeking AfD support in parliament.

Orban’s Patriots for Europe bloc seeks further far-right influence in Brussels.

Is there a German word for “an endorsement that has a net negative effect”?

alleycat@lemmy.world on 12 Feb 2025 20:06 next collapse

“Bärendienst”, as in “A well meaning action that has unintended negative consequences”?

cygnus@lemmy.ca on 12 Feb 2025 20:19 next collapse

I’ll take it!

Skua@kbin.earth on 12 Feb 2025 20:25 collapse

And literally meaning "bear service", I think? That's hilarious. The most formidable beast of the wilds of Europe, simply a bumbling little guy always making things worse when they try to help

lime@feddit.nu on 12 Feb 2025 21:54 collapse

it’s from an 1800 year old Indian fable about a bear who crushes his friend’s skull with a rock in an attempt to kill an annoying fly.

many european languages seem to have the expression.

Oooh that's cool, thank you for sharing

GojuRyu@lemmy.world on 14 Feb 2025 07:09 collapse

Yeah I recognized the german as being equivalent to the danish bjørnetjeneste, which also means bear service or slightly more accurately a bear favor.

x00z@lemmy.world on 12 Feb 2025 22:20 collapse

Yeah, the whole of the EU knows Hungary is our corrupt little member.

This might make some far right wingers realize that fascism is only good for the powerful and wealthy.

Matombo@feddit.org on 13 Feb 2025 09:59 collapse

ha ha, no, right wingers only realize stuff when they personally are affected and sometimes not even then. See the USA right now.

Quoting Zhukov in a thread relating to Hungarian dysfunction, really? Why not see what Pol Pot thought about ophthalmology?

Edit: downvoters may want to educate themselves on what Zhukov was up to in 1956.

They get to learn where the term Tankie comes from!

Edit: also, I think Europe may be mad about the mass rapes, the red army sitting on their asses while the Nazis razed Warsaw, actively preventing East Germany and East Berlin from rebuilding while West Berlin and West Germany thrived, etc more so than the destroying fascism part. Just my two cents.

Málenkij Robot memorial, Budapest.

The problem was not the liberation, but that the only thing they changed was which way the wagons with people were leaving the country never to be seen again.

Do you understand what being in charge means? Because they aren’t.

amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 13 Feb 2025 07:42 collapse

there are polls saying they could come in second in the elections this month. and some CDU members planning a coalition. I wouldn’t be so optimistic. regardless if they win or not, the mainstream parties have already adopted their Nazi propaganda to win over their base so their goal is already being enacted

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 2025 07:44 collapse

Yes, I am aware that nothing in human civilization lasts forever apart from xenophobia and bigotry. Stating facts is not optimism. Until they gain power again, they are still Germany’s past, not Germany’s future.

amino@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 13 Feb 2025 07:49 collapse

no, you just have a very mainstream liberal view of how power actually works. it’s not just party in charge = this is the political course of the country

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world on 13 Feb 2025 07:55 collapse

No, I have a “very mainstream liberal view” of how time works. Until something that happens happens again, it’s part of the past.

I have no idea how you can read the words, “I am aware that nothing in human civilization lasts forever apart from xenophobia and bigotry” and then try to act like I said the exact opposite. Or did you just not read them?

Matombo@feddit.org on 13 Feb 2025 10:01 collapse

I am not sure, they delineated based on race not necessarily nationality, they hated Slavic people but Hungarians are not Slavic.

All in all, Hitler gave back territory lost in WWI to Hungary, so I think they just didn’t care.
