US aircraft carrier arrives in the Caribbean in major buildup near Venezuela (apnews.com)

The nation’s most advanced aircraft carrier arrived in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday in a display of U.S. military power, raising questions about what the new influx of troops and weaponry could signal for the Trump administration’s intentions in South America as it conducts military strikes against vessels suspected of transporting drugs.

The arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford and other warships, announced by the Navy in a statement, marks a major moment in what the administration insists is a counterdrug operation but has been seen as an escalating pressure tactic against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Since early September, U.S. strikes have killed at least 80 people in 20 attacks on small boats accused of transporting drugs in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean.

Enjoy being deployed to your next endless oil war, Americans!

Thanks, I won’t.

Depends on what the deployment is, if it is just airstrikes or even limited ground operations to break a few things and leave, no reason for it to be a forever war.

Note: I have made zero statements about that being something I would support.

What you should have said was nothing.

No reason to think it’s going to stop with Venezuela. Colombia is on the list, along with Brazil, and probably Mexico. Anyone they can’t bribe into being helpful, they’re going to invade, because assassination is boring and looks weak compared to sending the entire might of your army to kill one dude.

snooggums@piefed.world on 17 Nov 01:16 collapse

Ah yes, breaking a few things and leaving is a great way to solve problems. 100% success rate, absolutely no repercussions.

IronBird@lemmy.world on 17 Nov 04:15 collapse

historically, it has worked wonders with regards to “calming dissent back home”. not right but it does have a high success rate, they’ve been flipping through the same couple plays in the same playbook this whole time…

Don’t worry guys it’s just a ‘special military operation’. Trust.

It keeps reminding me of cyberpunk lore. In there, USA attacks Latin America for war against drug, loses and the lost resources trigger a collapse. It’s fiction of course, but the rich and powerful really seem to use dystopian fiction like it was a manual these days.

Pretty obvious isn’t it? They want to steal oiI and force another term by starting a “miIitary σperation”.

The question is what the fuck are we gonna do when this happens

There are actuaIIy several intentionaI misspeIIings in that post. It’s a habit I’ve developed in the event they decide to scrαpe the internet in search of whoever it is they’re after. I’m pretty sure this is aIready happening on most sociaI media pIatforms.

Because we definitely need the “nation’s most advanced aircraft carrier” to shoot some unarmed drug smugglers. Right. That’s totally believable.
