Anyone in the US with TikTok can you confirm you can’t type it?

LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net on 27 Jan 2026 19:18 next collapse

Not me but apparently they’ve confirmed they’re looking into this “glitch”.

whereIsTamara@lemmy.org on 27 Jan 2026 19:19 collapse

I’m sure it’s a glitch …

kaitco@lemmy.world on 27 Jan 2026 21:13 collapse

I’ve just tried it. I can type these things and do searches, view the videos, whatever.

I will note, however, that my TikTok settings are very customized, even being on iOS. I’ve gone through every single setting, both within the app and within the iOS settings, and I’ve turned off anything and everything that can be turned off. TikTok sees virtually nothing. So, maybe I’m not blocked because all TikTok knows is that I’ve got an iPhone, I may or may not be in the US (I keep on VPN), and that I’m Trekkie who enjoys ASMR videos at night, but that’s about it.

If they don’t wanna sell to US, then they gotta conform to stay in market.

venusaur@lemmy.world on 27 Jan 2026 23:41 collapse

But that’s the reality of it. They were trying to force them to sell or ban them. Sounds like they’re controlled in US by a mostly American company now anyways.

Unfortunately, you don’t have to fool all the people all the time, 99.93% of the people most of the time will do just fine. Shit, 51% is plenty enough.

jballs@sh.itjust.works on 28 Jan 2026 02:17 next collapse

We like to shit on Tik Tok, but you’re right that their reach is absolutely massive. Recently when Democrats were writing op eds and taking out ads saying that troops should ignore illegal orders, a high ranking member of the military (I forget who) commented that the messaging was ineffective because troops almost universally get their “news” through Tik Tok.

Take a look at the public NPR board at the bottom. I just clicked one executive and here is a paragraph on her:

Most recently, Levene was President of the National Media Group at Meredith Corporation, where she oversaw the company’s 40+ iconic brands including PEOPLE, Allrecipes, Entertainment Weekly, InStyle, TRAVEL&LEISURE, REAL SIMPLE and Magnolia Journal. She joined the company in 2019 as Chief Strategy Officer. Later that year, she was named Chief Digital Officer, responsible for the digital P&L of the company’s iconic brands. In late 2020, she was named President of Meredith’s National Media Group adding the print and licensing businesses to her management portfolio and making history as the company’s first female Corporate Officer. As President, she led the National Media Group through a period of unprecedented digital expansion, revenue growth and diversification, and strategic application of first-party data and consumer insights. Prior to Meredith’s sale to IAC’s DotDash in December 2021, the National Media Group reached nearly 190 million unduplicated American consumers every month across digital, print, social platforms, video, audio and connected home assistants.

NPR is who the board is. They’re trying to hide it a little more behind links and I don’t have time to go through everyone. I bet there are a shit ton of corporations on there like the last time I checked in 2024.

tomiant@piefed.social on 28 Jan 2026 05:16 next collapse

MSN is owned and operated by Microsoft Corporation.

MS NOW (formerly MSNBC), is a cable news channel owned by Versant Media Group.

Versant Media Group is an independent publicly traded company, after they spun off from Comcast.

Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts and his family retain significant share holder control.

He’s a billionaire that paid tons of money to both parties (let’s pause and think about this for a moment because as obvious as it is to all of us, we tend to forget that it is not normal to live in a two party state no more than it is living in a one party state), leaning mostly republican.

So, I guess, as billionaires go, he’s not the worst offender. But, as billionaires go, he will always do what is financially expedient- that’s why any rich person pays both sides, so that regardless who comes out on top YoY, they win.

sobchak@programming.dev on 28 Jan 2026 06:56 collapse

They are establishment Dem propaganda. I’ve noticed recent instances where they seem to be somewhat complicit or cagey with their language regarding all the fucked up shit that’s been going on. I.e. using language like “some people argue,” instead of plainly stating obviously illegal or fucked up shit. Their rebranding to MS Now was specifically to distance its brand from be a “resistance brand,” according to the CEO.

Meanwhile, we in Europe have American Billionaires constantly attacking any government or legal body that enforces their own national laws, by threatening to sue and throwing childish insults for suppressing free speech.

Many of us haven't ever had legal freedom of speech in our constitutions, but the reality is we have a lot more than Americans right now.

hector@lemmy.today on 27 Jan 2026 22:04 next collapse

Well the companies that own social media have a right to moderate as they see fit, and the government has a right to force them to regulate speech behind the scenes. So, freedom of speech means dick online. I mean elsewhere, present company excluded. Reddit is a world better than the rest of them but they’re fucked too and clearly getting worse, as any company going public will be, even without fascists seizing absolute power and nothing left to stop them.

Doomsider@lemmy.world on 28 Jan 2026 01:13 collapse

The government doesn’t have the right to regulate free speech behind the scenes. It has the ability to, but it is considered a violation of free speech for them to do this. Not that anyone cares.

hector@lemmy.today on 27 Jan 2026 22:42 collapse

Idk, the federal agency with 200 billion in the bank I think it a greater threat, seeing as tik tok is just one social media company. They all steal our data too, and sell it, including to the chinese the entire thing was bullshit. Once again it was because of Israel criticism being allowed, they didn’t falsely claim they were terrorist sympathizing by acknowledging what was going on over there.

Israel first, to such a degree it makes one wonder why they care so much, until you remember epstein was a honeypot for israel’s intelligence agency to get blackmail on US politicians, and the UK. And businessman, the ivy league in general, swells. They’ve a critical mass. And they could have more than just child fucking blackmail too.

tomiant@piefed.social on 27 Jan 2026 22:52 collapse

My point is that with control of TikTok, they can control enough of the voting population to be set forever (media is like, wow we don’t understand why young men have suddenly started skewing right wing hard), granting them the capacity to give as many billions they want to their private army. I legitimately think that 2024 was the last time we will have come to a semblance of a fair election- which I believe it wasn’t either way. They needed to win that one, the last one, every one after this will be “free and fair” in the Russian or North Korean sense of “free and fair”. I mean they are blatantly open about it, on every level, no need to even go into the fingerprints they left all over, or the times they literally were caught or did it anyway- 2000 elections being settled by the SC, voter record purges, buying votes, redistricting and gerrymandering, bomb threats to polling stations, mail in ballots banned, that time they were literally investigated by the FBI in Georgia and destroyed the servers, that whistleblower in charge of the voting machines getting assassinated, it just goes on and on and on…

On your second point, I’m with you, I answered one of your other comments, but it’s like… You have to tread lightly because you don’t want to give the nazis free ammo with that shit. I don’t know what to say, the situation is beyond unbelievably fucked up, and I genuinely don’t see how it can ever return to normality.

Doomsider@lemmy.world on 28 Jan 2026 01:16 next collapse

Our elections have always been corrupted to one degree or another. The concept of a popularity contest where the person that makes the most money generally wins is complete bullshit for a democracy.

Would Chinese TikTok allow anti-CCP content? I genuinely asking. If it does then yes, we can say it’s more democratic. If you mean that the “Chinese” TikTok allows anti-ICE and anti-MAGA/Trump content then this is just a foreign country that has nothing to loose from this, which is not necessarily “democratic”, it’s just that they probably have something to gain from it.
