Israeli minister taking ‘legal measures’ against French arms fair ban (www.theguardian.com)

Israel’s foreign minister has announced he is taking “legal and diplomatic measures” against the decision by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to ban Israeli companies from showing their wares at an arms fair in Paris next month.

Israel Katz described the “boycott” as an anti-democratic measure that was “not acceptable, especially between friendly nations”.

Katz did not elaborate on the measures he had in mind and the French government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Organisers of the Euronaval Salon, a naval defence fair due to take place between 4 and 7 November, told Reuters that after a decision by the French government no Israeli stands or exhibits would be allowed, although delegates could attend.

The mindset of the whole Israeli government is pretty astounding. It's like they feel entitled to do what they're doing, and anyone who vaguely hints at "maybe genocide isn't your strongest play?" is vilified. Israel is always the victim, no matter who or what is being done. It has strong "the left stole the election" vibes

Yeah, and they can afford to double down on everything, since the US has their back.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 20 Oct 20:44 collapse

They think they can afford to double down on everything. If you think logically then even with US support they can't afford to get on the EU's bad side. They're high on their own supply, is what it seems to me.

HK65@sopuli.xyz on 20 Oct 20:57 next collapse

The EU might stop supporting them, or even sanction them from their own trade, but I’m afraid the US will just make up for it by sending even more money. I still think that we in Europe should stop funding them, if only so that we can say that we were less complicit in these crimes against humanity.

Gsus4@mander.xyz on 21 Oct 00:30 collapse

Is the EU “funding” them? I thought all arms to Israel were for profit. Because if they aren’t, they should be sent to Ukraine instead if possible.

Saleh@feddit.org on 21 Oct 05:26 collapse

For Germany at least weapons are in part sold and in part gifted as military aid.

I dont think the EU as institution does, but probably some other EU countries also gift weapons.

In regards to Ukraine the thing is that production is limited. So anything that is useful to Ukraine but instead sold to Israel is a preventable opportunity loss for Ukraine.

They think they can afford to double down on everything.

As long as they have the US’ support, they are right about this.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 21 Oct 08:37 collapse

In the short term, maybe, but in the long term this behavior will cost them everything. The way they do things is an inherently unsustainable house of cards propped up by US goodwill that they're squandering away. And they are squandering it, because that shit isn't infinite no matter how much the Israeli public would like to think otherwise.

Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world on 21 Oct 08:39 collapse

Will it? Who’s gonna stop 'em?

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io on 21 Oct 08:41 collapse

Wow, that's fast. I edited the comment shortly after writing it so look at that first.

Then I’ll respond to the new bit:

There are 4 years between this presidential election and the next, during which time that goodwill can go into negative numbers and the electorate can do nothing.

Oh, I was talking medium to long term. In the short term yeah, nobody's gonna stop Israel.

And Netanyahu hopes to accomplish his goals before that can happen.

It’s Chutzpah turned up to 11 and the government never, ever, lets an opportunity slide.
