What gets me is how the toppling of the democratically elected Morsi government and the installation of el-Sisi isn’t written about in the same terms as the Pinochet coup against Allende. They’re practically interchangeable historical events.
Morsi threatened but stopped short of decriminalising Egypt’s practice of female genital mutilation, carried out on almost three-quarters of Egyptian girls, making it clear he would not tackle an issue he called “a family matter”.
The new constitution has swept away recognition of women’s rights and left the door open to the legalisation of perhaps Egypt’s most crippling social issue – underage marriage. Draft legislation that would allow the legal age of marriage to be lowered from 18 to 13 has been drawn up while clerics within the Muslim Brotherhood have indicated that marriage at the age of nine for girls is acceptable.
The girls’ bodies are not ready for childbirth and they are not ready for sexual relations which makes their husbands impatient with them.

And btw, the issue of underage-daughter selling and female genital multilation have both gotten so much worse and gone up since the Israeli-backed military-dictatorship of Eygpt came into power with increased davestating poverty. The same exact female abuses also increased in Sudan areas under the control of UAE/Israel-backed RSF military, so what about your feminism there?

mr. couldvebeenyou, how many times have you visited eygpt or sudan in your life prior to 2013 , and when was the last time you visited them?
If you have never left your keyboard, then go talk to actual Egyptions and Sudanese about underage daughter selling and genitial mutilation, and their causes and where they happen because I’m sure the daughters they sell were not even born neither raised under the New Allende. Just google and compare their currency inflations to let that speak alone.
Daughter selling and genital mutilation have gone up with the davestating poverty which have been caused by the Israeli-backed military dictatorship in both of these countries. That’s completly on top of losing their governement transparency and freedom of public criticism and protest by everyone and to everything and everyone INCLUDING their first democrarically elected president, and his Islamic party, and every governer and every single law they introduced. It’s wrong of you to ignore both the facts and logic to your whataboutism claim which was indeed awful in theory, but people would’ve been allowed to protest and enrich themselves way much than now to not genital mutilate and sell their daughter which they cannot feed nor educate under the current davestating poverty.
