Because it unequivocally is in decline?
People need to be realistic. We’ve been a poorer nation than we’ve pretended to be for a long, long time.
Like look at modern public buildings, not built to last, not like old stone and brick courthouses from the last century and the like. They’re just made with the same cheap materials as everything else.
The decline started with Nixon, got kicked up a gear by Reagan, but the first real crack in the armor was George W. Bush and his middle east boondoggles in Afghanistan and Iraq. After that the world was willing to look at it as somewhat of an erroneous event and expected cooler heads and serious people to prevail.
Now that instead of serious people prevailing, we’ve been spinning down the drain, and that’s literally the plan. The wholesale dismantling of US democracy was crowed from the rooftops as Project 2025.
The serious people in other countries aren’t going to be fooled again.
To quote George W. Bush “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, sh–, uhhh, you can’t fool me again.”
They could have hung on a lot longer, but they seem to be speedrunning the decline on purpose. I think most of it’s caused by backfiring really bad attempts to slow it.
But yeah I think once the AI thing crashes it’s probably best to have a bunker for a while.
US elites view it the same way, that's why they're all looting the place and developing closer relationships with the US empire's rivals.

It looks to me less like plebs reducing each other's numbers and more like the rich playing their favourite game.

I’m pretty sure China knew this since Reagan, by Bush Jr. it was undeniable.
Our government has proven to be untenable and should be dismantled. Balkanization is preferable to our current state… the State governments duplicate much of what the Federals do already. I don’t think even a constitutional convention can divert the inevitable.
Any government that elected Trump twice is long dead and rotten to the core, USA is a dead man walking.
Yes, I know some organization(s) says different, and claims we are not corrupt. But… we still are. Legalized bribery isn’t going to change anything, the end results are exactly the same.
Nixon; Watergate.
Reagan: Iran Contra.
Bush Jr. Iraq invasion.
Trump: Iran war causing the worst oil crisis in history.
The tendency towards ever bigger illegal actions by Republican presidents is insane.
And even that’s just to distract the world from Trump’s visits to Epstein island to rape children.
Not to mention the adults he’s raped, the insurrection against the US he led, or the myriad of other crimes he commits on a daily fucking basis.
Exactly, Trump doesn’t give a shit about the harm he is doing to others, if it benefits himself.
Starting a war and letting thousands die, is an absolute nothing burger to him. He is a malignant narcissist the worst form psychopath there is.
Just like he doesn’t care that he was taking food stamps away from families with children, and that he has forced millions off medicare.
He doesn’t give a shit either about the children he has probably raped, and allegedly even killed.

That’s a cool fantasy but China was barely a player during Reagan. I doubt they saw it that way. In fact I think they were probably quite happy about the USA doing economically well overall given most of their growth depended on production for and exports to the USA at the time. Pressured by the Soviet Union during the 70s, trade agreements with the USA were a god sent.
If we’re talking about decline China was concerned with it’s probably the decline of the Soviet Union. Once that was gone they were fully occupied tightening trade relationships around the world and were likely hoping everyone would keep growing and keep trading. That was until Xi came into power. He sees things very differently, apparently.
If you grew up in a place called the Rust Belt this may not come as a surprise.

Maybe it is even the other way round: it’s only the US which does not see the US in decline.
As an American, it’s not that uncommon for people here to think America is in decline. The corpo media and most politicians will never admit it, but there is no metric in which average citizen does not see things getting worse.
The main difference is that most Americans lack the global perspective to realize how serious and permanent this decline is. They don’t understand that things will never return to how they used to be.

Trump has undermined relations to all allies in multiple ways, to a degree that the coherence of NATO is in doubt. Trump has single handedly destroyed NATO, forcing NATO allies to seek new alliances.
On trade we are in a shadow trade war, where the response to US tariffs, is for trading partners to seek independence from American technologies.
The Iran War has ruined the reputation of the US military, that is currently the laughing stock of the world. Because USA can’t handle a poor country that has been economically sanctioned for decades. And technically USA has already lost that war from many perspectives.
The Gulf states too are unhappy with how USA has handled this, and the Petro dollar is highly threatened.
Since Trump took the presidency, the use of the USD as the international reserve currency has dropped 30%!!!
USA was already losing their position as world leader before Trump, with EU already seeking greater independence from USA, and China positioning themselves more internationally. But Trump has put a rocket launcher on what was mostly idling along, and he has made it clear for ALL allies and trade partners , that they can’t depend on USA anymore.
If we try to speculate a bit, the position of USA is in eminent danger from several sides. The American economy is held up by AI, but many claim that AI is a bubble, if that bubble burst, it will hit the American economy hard.
The American economy is dependent on total global trade, not just their own, because global trade is often done in USD.
If global trade declines, the demand for USD will decline too. And without a strong reserve currency position, financial institutions will be less prone to seek refuge in USD, but will choose for instance gold instead. So the dynamic that has been the saving grace for USA for 80 years, is coming to an end. And next time USA has a crisis, the world will not help USA finance their way out of it as we used to.
OK I’ll stop here, because I think the point should be clear. USA was already in decline, but after Trumps liberation day (Tariffs), it has been downhill ever faster. Threatening Canada who has been the closest ally to USA since before WW2, threatening NATO allies with taking Greenland by force. Of course threatening numerous other countries, even kidnapping Maduro, and now USA is in the most stupid war USA has ever engaged in, and USA is being embarrassed by an inferior power! And USA has caused the worst oil crisis the world has ever seen.
US democracy has been in decline for many decades now, and this is the result of a dysfunctional democracy.

I hate where USA is now, but so do many Americans, and I bet a good portion of the upvotes to this very US critical post, was actually Americans upvoting it. Because many Americans understand the problems.

The article says China fears Trump’s unpredictability but then does this unpredictability makes America stronger which contradicts that it is in decline.
No, the unpredictability relates to this particular president. The demented damage he has caused has weakened the US and will survive him. The fact that such an unsuitable person could be given such a role speaks to the decline.

No one important was there to greet him when he landed. They were actually meeting with the Iranians. Remember Trump begged China for help with the Straight of Hormuz disaster, and China didn’t even respond. Trump got so pissed off that he canceled the China trip after threatening them and as always he lied and now will be schooled by China. They will just smile and nod but behind his back do whatever they want. There is no trust in America in China especially since the US is leader in the worst anti Chinese propaganda.
China is running circles around the US and it’s regime. They have a backup plan for the backup plan and are largely independent from the US. Especially in regards to green energy, EV’s, battery technology, China is miles ahead.
