Summary

Mexico is waiting for a new response from Google regarding its mapping service’s use of “Gulf of America” in the U.S., while displaying “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that Google will face a lawsuit if it doesn’t restore the original name, arguing it violates Mexico’s sovereignty over 49% of the Gulf. The U.N. also recognizes the historic name.

Google defended its policy, saying it followed longstanding mapping practices after Trump’s renaming declaration amidst rising tensions between Mexico and the U.S.

The issue has also sparked press freedom concerns in the U.S.

Sheinbaum wasting her time and her country’s money on this is even sadder than Trump wasting ours.

partial_accumen@lemmy.world on 18 Feb 13:23 next collapse

Her efforts may not be to actually affect change, but to force Google to choose sides, and then extract concessions from them for doing so.

Fighting corruption should never be seen as a waste of time or money. No one likes to be the first to stand up, it’s easier to join an existing group. Google and Trump need to be shown that the rest of the world won’t go along with their bullshit.

ExtremeDullard@lemmy.sdf.org on 19 Feb 09:10 collapse

The problem is, this is the least of the problems posed by Trump, and we need all the energy focused on the shit he does that’s much more egregious. The Gulf of America is a distraction and Trump is doing it exactly on purpose to waste people’s energy on pointless shit and make them lose sight of what matters.

This is what Steve Bannon calls “flooding the zone”: come up with 3 outrageous items per day so people can only deal with one and let the two others pass. I suggest that we should deal with the Gulf of America later, after we’re done dealing with the destruction of the country, is what I meant.

Why would a private business be in charge of the world maps? Fuck google and fuck naziland (formely usa on my personnal map), just don’t use their stupid things.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world on 18 Feb 14:09 collapse

For most of history private businesses were in charge of maps. They’d put fake towns and islands on them as a form of copy protection.

One thing humans don’t do is change, so get used to this stupidity continuing.

introvertcatto@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 18 Feb 13:57 next collapse

Isn’t name change only for USA? Other countries still use Gulf of Mexico unless they too decide to change it for whatever reasons. Also why are people not talking about (Persian Gulf/Arabian Gulf) or (Sea of Japan/East sea)

Jot defending Trump but this thing is chaotic neutral thing he did, there are bigger issues he did.

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 18 Feb 16:14 next collapse

The implication behind it is that the US owns the Gulf, and nobody wants this change, especially Americans. It’s chaotic malicious, along the lines of claiming ownership over the Panama Canal (which he also did) and Greenland (did that one, too).

introvertcatto@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 18 Feb 17:03 collapse

Technically USA owns Mexican gulf, parts of it. The same way Mexico owns other parts of gulf.

EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone on 18 Feb 17:33 collapse

Yes, but the internationally recognized name is the Gulf of Mexico. It has that history behind it that even Americans agree with. Trump might as well have decreed that it should be called the Gulf of Trump and that the state of New Mexico is now South Colorado.

Mexico and Canada should put a tariff on Google ad buys.

Mexico should just ban Google from operating in Mexico. I’m sure they would capitulate then.
