Trump Says He Hammered Out ‘Complex’ Greenland Deal with NATO: ‘This Is Forever’ (www.mediaite.com)

Second article on the deal: mediaite.com/…/trump-greenland-deals-reportedly-i…

NATO released a statement on Wednesday shortly after President Donald Trump announced he and NATO Secretary Secretary General Mark Rutte had “formed’ a “framework” of a deal on Greenland. The NATO statement came amid new reporting from the New York Times that deal may include the U.S. being given “sovereignty over small pockets” of land in Greenland.

I hope that isn’t actually the case because it would be egregious even for Rutte, a world champion in slobbering his orange Daddy’s knob.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works on 21 Jan 2026 22:46 collapse

It’s not. Trump is massively overstating the deal. They’re basically just giving him stuff he already has. And they’re doing it in a way that forces the US to do more work on Arctic defence. It’s kind of genius actually.

HowRu68@lemmy.world on 21 Jan 2026 23:00 next collapse

So Trump got “Rutted”?

redditmademedoit@piefed.zip on 21 Jan 2026 23:02 collapse

It’s probably right that Trump is overstating his win, but frankly any form of yielding to Trump is infuriating. If there is a deal that covers “the entire Arctic region” the details will be important. Countries in that region include Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. One should not assume it’s a win for the Nato countries with more Trump regime forces in the region after the US has threatened invasion or annexation of two of them.

Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works on 22 Jan 2026 04:01 collapse

The thing is, the US already has agreements that would allow them to stage a military presence in Greenland almost double the entire country’s permanent population. So no, this isn’t allowing them any kind of expanded presence. They already had that option any time they wanted to exercise it. But Trump, despite all his bullshit claims, had no actual interest in a US military presence in the Arctic region.

Seaguy05@lemmy.world on 21 Jan 2026 22:33 next collapse

Well, yes and no. I fear this step opens the doors for furure claims on more land there. Not saying it will be Trump, but eventually someone might start claiming more land there, because “they maintain it”, “they have military there” and “they already own parts” of the island anyway. Europe is letting US gain a foothold in Greenland. And once they get a piece, they will never let go. It’s always the case for imperialism and neofascism - especially the type that is on the rise in the US

Yeah I get it, trump could live 20 more years, but if we look at what’s likely for someone in such conditions, he probably shouldn’t make it 10. But who knows. We can hope, and that hope isn’t baseless.

We call it a spoon, shoes, man, burger, what is that. I don’t know.

Is NATO even aware of this “deal”?

fennesz12@feddit.dk on 22 Jan 2026 12:30 collapse

Not on paper. But I honestly think Rutte was kind of used as some sort of liaison by our Danish officials (And perhaps some actual adults in the US administration if there are any), because he is quite good at talking the toddler down. We Danes have an exceptional relationship with NATO. We have a highly experienced former minister and former general in NATO that has also worked on the sidelines to communicate with the right people.

eRac@lemmings.world on 22 Jan 2026 00:09 next collapse

“Forever. be forever” Trump said about the deal. “That’s better than the Obama deal with the famous Iran nuclear deal, with a nine-year deal. No, this is forever. This is long-term.”

What an asshole. Blows up a significant measure in limiting the spread of nukes, then acts like it fell apart on its own.

ikidd@lemmy.world on 22 Jan 2026 03:34 next collapse

Of course not. This is all a face-saving canard. He’ll be back to threatening nuclear war again in a couple weeks.

MBech@feddit.dk on 22 Jan 2026 18:07 collapse

He doesn’t. What he does have the authority to do, is sell Trump a 75-ish year old deal made by Truman.

Literally all this does is shut the toddler up, and invite him to sit at the kids table while the adults talk.

fox2263@lemmy.world on 22 Jan 2026 06:57 next collapse

I think what Trump likes to do is bluster and bloviate and threaten things in order to get a “deal” without ever actually intending to do anything.

But then sometimes the opposing side fights back and he puts his tail between his legs and moves on to the next target.

I’m guessing NATO said some things that made him retreat. Like we won’t buy anything American anymore and your MIC collapses and we will sell of a load of bonds etc. Carney did this last year, just hovers on the button and see the orange turds reaction.

fennesz12@feddit.dk on 22 Jan 2026 12:23 next collapse

Dane here. Here is what has actually happened for those wondering:

Our prime minister and representative had a great meeting with Rutte just before, and also after. Our Danish foreign minister and Greenlandic representative are now ready to talk with the US administration behind closed doors, now that the circus is over.

I think they’d prefer to keep it out of the media, but I think the massive absurdity around this has ended up with their administration showing all their cards, and our officials holding all theirs. Whatever it is they want on paper still can’t be accomplished as far as I can tell, but now they are appearently ready to talk like adults.

It’s very odd, and according to NATO officials, they pretty much just talked about continuing things as usual in the arctic. Because we all know that there is absolutely no threat there. But it is likely to have something to do with Theils and other billionaires investment in mineral search, and perhaps being able to extract Germanium and Gallium from the underground sometime in the future. Because as of now it is not cost-effective, but China holds like 80% of the market.

So yeah, whatever it is they will give to us and Greenland for this, they will have to figure out over a cup of coffee, because now adults can talk. Let’s see how long it lasts though before the real idiots in power over there decide to whisper something in the clowns ear, so we can have another reality show performance.

Sand is everywhere. But you can’t refine it anywhere while keeping it economically viable.

Extraction/refining costs vary depending on purity, and there are a million other factors involved, and not just that even.

Setting up a large-scale sustained extraction operation requires many guarantees (including geopolitical, logistical, and stability/security considerations).

Otherwise, all world powers would be about done strip-mining Africa and Antarctica right now.
