I remember Andrew. The same thing happened. The U.S. Army eventually stepped in and made bi weekly supply deliveries in coordinaton with the National Guard. Back in those days the Red Cross was complete garbage.
What else are you supposed to do when you have no food because your house was destroyed and all the stores are closed?
“Looting” is taking luxury items, TVs, jewelry, etc.
Taking food, sanitary supplies, bottled water, etc. from destroyed stores is “salvaging”.
I mean they’re doing both. Not that I think theres anything wrong with looting from big corporations like walmart.
The bare essentials only. Water, cand food, a PS5, antibiotics, gas.
eh… it’s stealing any way you look at it. it’s not like they’re tracking down the shop owner and paying them for the “salvaged” goods…
This exact thing will happen when society collapses, and we will all call it survival of the fittest.
What would you have these poor people do? Sit on top of the rumble of their homes and watch their kids die of thirst and hunger? Watch them suffer from open wounds? Or take some water, some canned foods, antibiotic cream and gauze from a fully insured store?
The ones taking tvs and things like that are foolish, at least in the short term, but they may be able to trade those items for supplies later.
I wonder if Walmart would have been smart to prepare survival items ahead of time, put it out on the curb, and say “Here, take this.” Anything past that would be theft of course, but Walmart could get positive PR for “donating” stuff they were going to lose anyway.
Then stealing is okay sometimes

Much like with Katrina, Acapulco has been completely destroyed.
Unlike Katrina, there’s absolutely zero support for the people of Acapulco. The Army or the Navy didn’t get there. There were no shelters. No food distribution, no local or state government.
While the Red Cross was able to get there, the government is now saying they won’t let humanitarian relief get there, and only the army will help…of course, the army wasn’t even able to get the president to Acapulco, because the idiot decided to go by land…and hit stuck in mud.
Homes in Acapulco are not insured, and the fund for disasters that the coincided to have to help in situations like this has been depleted.
I don’t condone stealing…but there are no food supplies and people needed to get something. The looters that took TVs, and such…personally I thought it was stupid…and then I realized something: In a video someone yelled: “Walmart is insured…”. These people know they have lost it all, and they will never get it back. There ways of providing for their family are gone. As a human, I don’t blame them from wanting to get back something…I think it’s kind of dumb…but now I get why they did it. Walmart will get paid, but their life’s are ruined.
